At long last, followers of Tiva (and those just joining) have something to look forward to! The initial three episodes of NCIS: Tony & Ziva have been unveiled in the 2025 TV lineup, and they were packed with intrigue. Be it the emotional reunion between Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David in the flashback narrative, or their constant evasion of perils lurking at every turn, including lethal self-driving vehicles, this Paramount+ exclusive spinoff within the extended NCIS series did not disappoint with its abundance of heart-pounding and emotionally resonant scenes. In the latter category, Tony experienced a shocking heartbreak towards the end of “Cover Story,” and showrunner John McNamara of Tony & Ziva disclosed to TopMob how this will influence the remainder of the season.

In the third premier episode, Michael Weatherly’s and Cote de Pablo’s characters decided to take a low-key retreat at a ski lodge owned by Tony’s girlfriend Nicole. It was supposed to be vacant since it was offseason, but surprise! Nicole and her husband Max unexpectedly showed up while Tony and Ziva were settling in. Tony had no idea that Nicole was married, so he felt deceived when she arrived. McNamara hinted to me that this development could significantly affect the character of Tony in the coming weeks on NCIS: Tony & Ziva.

It seems to me that he’s just now fully recognizing that he’d been drifting through life without much purpose. He’d been in denial about his lingering feelings for Ziva, and perhaps he was worrying excessively about the fact that Tali would eventually grow up and leave home. That’s been a crucial aspect of his life. So it looks like he was seeking affection and companionship, but made a poor decision in doing so. His realization of this mistake might make him reconsider whether he also made a mistake with Ziva. I hope this moment will provide insight into Tony and Ziva’s relationship. That’s what I expect to happen.

To keep Max from discovering that Nicole was having an affair, Tony and Ziva faked being married, claiming they were at the cabin due to calendar confusion instead. Interestingly, when Max eventually found out the truth, it wasn’t the infidelity that angered him, but rather feeling left out. It turned out that Nicole and Max had a relationship where Max had grown fond of Tony as well.

Despite it all eventually becoming irrelevant, it wasn’t solely due to Tony’s disdain for the swingers lifestyle that made a difference. Unbeknownst to everyone, Max was actually a police officer specializing in border control. When he discovered Tony and Ziva were wanted for their involvement in the explosion at Reigning Fire Peacekeeping Solutions, he attempted to arrest them, even though he was almost completely undressed. However, our resilient characters managed to outmaneuver him and confined Max and Nicole in a room to prevent them from contacting the authorities.

Indeed, their romantic bond seems to have come undone, but as John McNamara suggests, this turn of events could prove beneficial for Tony DiNozzo down the line. The specifics of the rift between Tony and Ziva David remain unclear, yet it’s encouraging that they manage to cooperate amicably as parents for their daughter Tali. As we move forward, it appears that his recent awareness of his actions with Nicole, coupled with the tumultuous circumstances that have seen them flee together across Europe, may prompt Tony to rekindle what was once shared between him and Ziva.

Cote de Pablo made it clear that she wouldn’t join the show “NCIS: Tony & Ziva” unless there was a favorable conclusion for these two characters by the end of the season. This indicates that we can look forward to some positive developments for them in the upcoming episodes, regardless of what form they take.
