I Know Will Trent’s Not A Supernatural Drama, But The Showrunner’s Comments About Him Being ‘Haunted’ By Ulster Have Me Thinking

Be warned, this contains spoilers for the second episode of Will Trent’s fourth season, titled “Love Takes Time,” which is currently available to stream with a Hulu subscription.

The fourth season of Will Trent is starting strong, and the premiere left viewers on the edge of their seats! The episode ended with a dangerous scene – it looked like Will Trent (Ramón Rodriguez) might be involved in a car crash with the serial killer James Ulster (Greg Germann). Thankfully, Will survived, but something else seems to be happening beneath the surface. While the show isn’t meant to be about the supernatural, comments from the executive producer about a possible haunting are making me wonder what’s really going on.

The second episode of Season 4, titled “Love Takes Time,” revealed that Will and Ulster were drugged and kidnapped by one of Ulster’s many fiancées. This led to a tense psychological battle and a shootout, ultimately resulting in Ulster’s death after he was shot. Before he died, Ulster cryptically told Will, “See you soon.” The meaning behind this message remains a mystery, but co-showrunner Daniel Thomsen explained to TVLine how it will affect Will’s journey in future episodes.

Will likely thinks the house is haunted by him. Later, when he’s with Caleb, it becomes clear that Will himself is the one who’s haunted. However, there’s a deeper meaning to what’s happening with Ulster that Will doesn’t realize, and we haven’t discussed yet.

Just to clarify, Will Trent is a standard crime show, unlike Supernatural. However, the idea that Will is troubled by memories of Ulster makes me wonder if the show might explore some supernatural themes. I don’t expect to see Ulster’s ghost appear, at least not in a traditional ghostly way. Anything could happen, but I think it’s more likely Will will experience Ulster as hallucinations, a result of his trauma.

It’s understandable why Trent is struggling emotionally. He went through a terrible experience – he was kidnapped, drugged, and mentally traumatized, followed by a brush with death. It’s hard to imagine anyone recovering quickly from that. So, the mysterious message, “See you soon,” and Will feeling haunted suggest that Ulster’s memories will likely continue to deeply affect Trent for some time.

Considering Ulster was the one who died and spoke those last words, this could be a much larger piece of the puzzle. We’re referring to the serial killer who previously claimed to be Will’s father. While that turned out to be false, and Will met his real father last season, it’s possible Ulster left messages for Will – perhaps a creepy promise to always be present. Alternatively, Ulster might have started a chain of events before he died, and his final words could be a hidden clue, meant to be understood symbolically.

From the very beginning, Will Trent has kept viewers guessing, so it’s unclear what Ulster meant by his farewell and what Thomsen meant by saying Will is troubled. I’m really looking forward to seeing how the story unfolds, and it makes me even more excited about what’s to come this season.

You can watch new episodes of Will Trent on ABC every Tuesday at 8 p.m. Eastern Time, and see how Will handles both his cases and personal challenges.
