As a thirty-something millennial, I’ve recently noticed that people are no longer reminding me of my youth and instead complimenting my appearance for my age. This subtle shift has given me a sense of time passing, but it wasn’t until I watched the 2025 film “The Map That Leads To You” featuring Madelyn Cline from “Outer Banks” and KJ Apa from “Riverdale” that I truly felt older than ever before in my life.
After watching the trailer, I was eagerly anticipating The Map Of Things That Lead To You. However, throughout the movie, our main character Heather (Cline) made questionable choices after questionable choices that left me frustrated. Watching it on Amazon Prime Video, I found myself mentally criticizing these decisions as they unfolded. Although I understand the allure of an adventure, some of the choices in this film left me feeling disappointed and ready to offer advice to Heather and anyone else considering a similar journey. It’s like being that old lady who shakes her cane at the kids running wild on the street, but I feel compelled to share my thoughts with them nonetheless.
Advice No. 1: Don’t Hang Out With Random Boys In Euro Clubs
Initially, it’s important to point out that spending time with strangers you’ve encountered at clubs and subsequently splitting up from your travel group to pursue other activities seems questionable, especially in a foreign land. I understand that youth often finds itself in situations that may appear risky, but in the novel The Map That Leads To You, it seems unwise for the girls to separate early on without a plan to reunite, particularly in an unfamiliar country. It almost feels like offering unsolicited advice as a concerned parent, but one must wonder what benefits any of the girls expected from this actions?
Indeed, it appears that the plan didn’t go well for Amy, Hannah’s friend. Unfortunately, her passport and money were taken by a man named Victor whom she met on the train and later encountered at a club. It seems she made some questionable choices.
Advice No. 2: You Are Not Playing Robin Hood If You Steal From A Thief
In The Map That Leads To You, I found myself struggling to accept the characters and their actions, particularly during the scene where Jake, Rafe, and the girls pursued the individual who had stolen Amy’s belongings. Fortunately, it appeared that Victor wasn’t dangerous, making the outcome less perilous. However, what followed left a bad taste in my mouth.
Jake chose to use the money Victor had illegally obtained from innocent people to enjoy a day off with the group. He proposed the plan as a “little spontaneous outing” to the girls, and Rafe argued that doing something wrong to compensate for another wrong is justified. Heather showed discomfort at the thought of spending stolen money, but the rest of the group seemed unfazed and proceeded with the plan, utilizing the ill-gotten funds for a side trip.
It seemed appropriate to report Amy’s stolen items and the discovered cache of stolen goods to the police after the incident, but it appears they didn’t see it as a priority amidst their vacation. Regrettably, doing the right thing often isn’t the most enjoyable outcome, and this plot twist was particularly disheartening.
Advice No. 3: It Is Not A Good Longterm Plan To Quit Your Job And Chase A Boy Around In Europe
In one’s twenties, life can be both taxing and exhilarating, as it’s a period when responsibilities are fewer, allowing for more daring ventures. For instance, considering a whirlwind romance like dating Pete Davidson. It makes perfect sense why Heather would yearn for an adventure before settling into her first grown-up job. While I might find falling in love in such a short span challenging, Jake’s eagerness to accompany her back to New York, given his adaptable schedule, felt like a charming test of whether the relationship could thrive. (More details on that later).
Initially, it appeared as though Heather was on the verge of squandering her career, and ultimately, she chose to leave her profession behind to pursue Jake in Europe. The film seems to convey a lesson that one can afford to chase dreams during their twenties, but this luxury is not common and might entail forfeiting financial stability later in life. I couldn’t help but think while watching, ‘That guy isn’t worth jeopardizing your early retirement savings!’
Yeah, I get it. I’m old.
Advice No. 4: If A Boy Ghosts You At An Airport, Don’t Chase After Him
This leads me to my concluding thought. Jake received unfortunate news at the airport with Heather, which promptly led him to disappear from both her and their budding circle of friends. In turn, this left Heather feeling distressed, but she cleverly devised a plan to locate him in Europe again. The film ended on a note where she pleaded her case for reconciling their relationship. To clarify, this occurs after he vanished without a trace, causing her distress at the airport.
Hey there, as a fan who values honesty and respect, let me tell you, girl, it’s not right when a guy just vanishes like that. I can understand he’s dealing with a tough time due to his cancer diagnosis, and we all need space to cope. But disappearing on you at the airport and cutting off contact completely? That’s not cool.
There’s nothing romantic or salvageable about such behavior. It’s important to communicate openly during trying times like these. I wish things could have turned out differently, but it seems he chose a path that doesn’t align with what a thoughtful and considerate person would do. Stay strong, keep your head high, and remember you deserve better.
Reflecting on my past experiences, particularly those from my youth, has shaped the way I view things, including this romance. However, its foundation seems rather precarious to me. Despite the fact that The Map That Leads To You provided Jake and Heather with a somewhat happy ending, I find it hard to envision a long-term future for their relationship. Given Jake’s diagnosis, I would be hesitant to recommend this movie as one of Amazon’s top picks.
