Dwayne Johnson built his career on his impressive physique. Whether he was overpowering opponents as The Rock in WWE or starring in major Hollywood action films, his size has always been a defining characteristic. For Benny Safdie’s The Smashing Machine, a new movie coming out in 2025, Johnson gained 30 pounds to portray MMA legend Mark Kerr. However, the Mummy Returns star is now focusing on getting leaner and reducing his muscle mass. Still, if you’ve been calling him “skinny” recently, Emily Blunt has something to say about it. And, frankly, I can’t get enough of watching her playfully criticize those comments in this clip.
While promoting their new A24 movie, Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson spoke with Entertainment Tonight, and the interview quickly became a playful back-and-forth. In a clip shared on ET’s official Instagram – which you can view below – the host mentioned the online buzz about Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s seemingly slimmer physique, and the English actress didn’t hesitate to chime in:

The host correctly notes that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson remains a very large person, even if his physical size is reduced. This prompted a funny response from Emily Blunt, who quipped:
‘He’s so skinny!’ And you’re like…[gestures to The Rock] What do you mean?!
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson playfully reacted with laughter when the host commented, “Oh, he’s so tiny now!”-a remark that seems surprising to anyone who’s seen him recently. The Black Adam star has lost a little weight for a new role, even quipping that he doesn’t “look pregnant” anymore. Despite the weight loss, he still appears incredibly strong-like he could easily lift a very heavy vehicle.

Portraying MMA great Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine demanded a unique physical approach for the Jumanji actor, going beyond simply matching Kerr’s appearance. He needed to show the physical and emotional toll of a fighter battling addiction and inner struggles. The well-known actor from Maui now says he’s focusing on getting leaner for a new role, with a goal of losing another 25 to 30 pounds over time.
The Devil Wears Prada actress doesn’t just respond to the comments; she quickly shifts her attention to her co-star. After Johnson explains he’s losing weight for a role playing a 75-year-old man, she immediately interrupts him:
Which you are [75 years old]… Finally, you’re playing your age.
Brutal, but hilarious.
While promotional tours can be tiring, Emily Blunt consistently demonstrates she’s well-suited to them. Her spontaneous wit and genuine connection with Johnson make her interviews genuinely enjoyable to watch.
The Smashing Machine isn’t the only project from Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Safdie brothers, as they’ve suggested a follow-up to their movie based on the Disney theme park attraction Jungle Cruise (which you can watch with a Disney+ subscription) could happen. However, we don’t have to wait long for more from Johnson, as he’s also starring in another film directed by the Safdies. Believe it or not, The Rock will play a thin, weathered 75-year-old accompanied by a chicken! This upcoming movie is called Lizard Music, and he’ll have a feathered friend by his side.
