It’s only been two years since the incredible Godzilla Minus One showed a terrifying Godzilla rising from the sea to destroy post-war Japan, and now there’s a sequel! Godzilla Minus Zero is on its way, and as a fan of the Oscar-nominated film, I’m thrilled to see the iconic monster return to the big screen.
We don’t have all the details yet, but a lot is known about the new sci-fi movie. If you’re looking forward to returning to Tokyo with Yamazaki and Toho’s latest film, I’ll share everything I’ve discovered so far.
What Is The Godzilla Minus Zero Release Date?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new Godzilla film, Godzilla Minus Zero, is likely to be released near the end of 2026, and we can expect to hear more about it in the coming year.
Toho hasn’t announced a release date for the new film yet, but the last Godzilla movie premiered in Japan on November 3, 2023, coinciding with “Godzilla Day.” It’s possible the new film, Minus Zero, could have a similar release timing. The previous film was a huge success in both Japan and around the world after it came out.
Takashi Yamazaki Is Back As The Writer, Director, And VFX Supervisor

Rumors of a sequel to Minus One have been circulating since the beginning of 2024. Director Yamazaki initially suggested he wouldn’t return, but he’s now committed to writing, directing, and overseeing the visual effects for the next film. Given Minus One‘s huge success at the box office, it’s not surprising that Yamazaki and Toho are collaborating again.
The news was officially revealed at Godzilla Fest 2025 (on the official Godzilla website): the celebrated filmmaker and visual effects expert will direct the upcoming sequel. While the budget for Minus Zero hasn’t been made public, it will be interesting to see if Yamazaki receives a larger budget this time, given the success of the first film with a limited amount of funding.
The Godzilla Minus Zero Trailer

A full trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero isn’t available yet, but Toho released a short teaser video on the Godzilla YouTube channel in November 2025. The video simply reveals the movie’s title and doesn’t include any scenes, characters, or plot details. However, you can hear Godzilla wreaking havoc as the title is shown. You can watch it below.
The initial teaser for Minus One was released in July 2023, just before the movie came out. So, it’s likely we’ll see a full trailer or more footage from the new film around the middle of next year.
What Is Godzilla Minus Zero About?

While Toho and Takashi Yamazaki haven’t revealed details about the next film, sources at The Hollywood Reporter say it will serve as both a continuation of the story and a significant, standalone work.
As you might remember, the main monster in Godzilla Minus One was defeated when former Japanese navy soldiers and ordinary citizens worked together on a desperate plan to protect their country after World War II. But the movie ended with a strange mark appearing on one of the survivors, followed by a shot of Godzilla’s tissue starting to grow again on the ocean floor. This suggests Godzilla isn’t truly gone and could return in the future.
Production On Godzilla Minus Zero Will Reportedly Get Underway In Late 2025

Along with announcing the release timeframe for Godzilla Minus One, The Hollywood Reporter shared that filming will begin before the year’s end. Parts of the movie are planned to be shot on location in New Zealand and Norway sometime in 2025, though specific dates haven’t been revealed yet.
This Isn’t The Only Godzilla Movie Coming Out

Toho is getting ready to release a new monster movie, and another installment in the MonsterVerse is also planned. Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, scheduled for release on March 26, 2027, will continue the American Godzilla and Kong storyline, bringing the two famous monsters together for another epic adventure. Warner Bros. has confirmed that, like recent films in the series, Godzilla and Kong will team up to face a massive, world-threatening danger.
Grant Sputore is directing the new film, taking over from Adam Wingard. The movie will feature both the giant creatures fans know and love, as well as new human characters. While specific details are currently being kept secret, more information is expected to be released shortly.
