With so many new shows appearing on streaming services, it’s easy to overlook really good ones. A good example is The Artful Dodger on Hulu.
The fantastic series The Artful Dodger recently came back for its second season on February 10th, after a three-year wait. It quickly became popular on Disney+, reaching number five in the U.S. and number two globally. The show was especially successful in Germany, where it hit number one, and also ranked highly – in second place – in countries like Serbia, Montenegro, and Sweden.
As a huge film and TV fan, I was really excited to hear about this new show that premiered in 2023. It’s actually a sequel to Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist – a continuation of that classic story! Thomas Brodie-Sangster, who you might recognize from Love Actually or The Maze Runner, plays the lead role. They’ve also cast as Norbert Fagin, and Maia Mitchell, who I loved in Good Trouble, is playing Lady Belle Fox. It’s a really interesting take on the original, and I’m eager to see where they take the story.
Despite receiving positive reviews, the show hasn’t gained much attention. The Artful Dodger began as a limited series, exploring what happened to Jack Dawkins after the original Dickens story ended.
This show reimagines the well-known character as a doctor working in Australia. However, his peaceful life is disrupted when a figure from his past tries to lure him back into a criminal lifestyle, forcing him to make a difficult choice.
Season 2 of The Artful Dodger continues the story with familiar faces and plenty of intrigue, including crime, romance, and heartbreak. Picking up six months after the dramatic end of Season 1, we find Jack having spent that time in prison.
The show’s cast is expanding with the addition of Luke Bracey as Inspector Henry Boxer, Jeremy Sims as Uncle Dickie, and newcomer Zac Burgess as Phineas Golden, promising to add even more excitement.
The Artful Dodger Season 2 Has a Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score
I was so thrilled with the first season! Critics really liked it – it got a 92% fresh rating, and even earned a ‘Certified Fresh’ badge! But honestly, the fans seemed to love it even more, giving it a whopping 96% approval. While it didn’t take over the world, it definitely made a splash and left me wanting more.
Many shows struggle to maintain their quality in later seasons, but The Artful Dodger is a welcome exception – it actually got even better! The second season received perfect scores from critics (100% based on nine reviews) and a very strong 97% approval rating from viewers.
The show is currently doing very well with audiences around the world, which could mean it will be renewed for another season. While Disney+ hasn’t officially announced a renewal yet, actor David Thewlis recently told The Upcoming that those involved are feeling optimistic about a third season.
The Artful Dodger Seasons 1 and 2 are streaming on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally.
