Hulu has a fantastic historical drama that feels like a blend of Game of Thrones and the movie The Last Samurai. Big-scale historical and fantasy shows are rare on TV because they’re incredibly expensive to make – think large armies, stunning sets, and lots of actors!
Stories like that usually feel best suited for movies. Think of films like The Last Samurai, starring Tom Cruise – a really good, but often overlooked, historical action movie. It’s about an American army officer who becomes involved in a samurai uprising in 1800s Japan, and it’s a surprisingly thoughtful and intricate story despite its simple premise.
High-quality, large-scale TV series are rare, but a few stand out. Shows like Game of Thrones, The Rings of Power, and Rome are prime examples. Joining their ranks is Shōgun, a 10-episode series now streaming on Hulu. Released in 2024, it’s considered one of the best historical or fantasy epics currently available, and with plans for two more seasons, now is a great time to start watching.
The new series is based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel, which was first turned into a TV miniseries in 1980. Shōgun follows John Blackthorne, an English sailor who arrives in Japan in 1600 with his crew. He lands in the middle of a period of significant change and conflict within the country.
With the recent death of the former ruler, five powerful lords are now vying for control of Japan. Among them, Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) is considered the most skilled and honorable, and he’s working to unite the country under his rule, aided by the unexpected arrival of an English sailor named Blackthorne.
How Shōgun Is Different From Other Historical And Fantasy Epics
Similar to Game of Thrones, Shōgun focuses just as much on the strategies and power struggles of its leaders and the secrets within the palace as it does on action like sword fights and battles. In fact, Shōgun spends even more time on political maneuvering, and viewers might be surprised by how few large-scale fights or battles actually occur throughout the series.
The violence in Shōgun is sudden and extremely harsh. The story takes place as Japan is first encountering gunpowder, which is actually why Blackthorne isn’t immediately killed. When guns are used in fights, the results are shockingly violent and effective, a stark contrast to the traditional code of honor surrounding death and combat for the samurai.

What sets Shōgun apart from other large-scale historical dramas isn’t necessarily its accuracy with specific individuals, but its commitment to realistically portraying the time period itself. The series depicts a world undergoing significant change, and many characters struggle to accept or adapt to these shifts.
Shōgun feels deeply thoughtful and focuses on the inner lives of its characters. Success isn’t usually won through physical combat; instead, characters overcome challenges by grappling with their own personal struggles. The show brilliantly portrays these internal battles, which everyone is facing.
Shōgun isn’t like most large-scale historical dramas. Instead of focusing on broad conflicts and numerous battles across Japan, the show keeps its focus relatively narrow. However, it explores huge themes – like fate, loyalty, and love – which ultimately make it feel more impactful and sweeping than stories that simply jump from place to place.
