As a huge fan of the original, I was really excited about the planned revival of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but unfortunately, it’s been canceled. The creator of the 90s show just announced that Hulu has decided not to go ahead with the sequel series, which is a real bummer.
Sarah Michelle Gellar reveals Buffy revival isn’t moving forward at Hulu
The news that the planned revival of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was canceled shocked fans. According to Deadline, even Sarah Michelle Gellar found out about Hulu’s decision on Friday night while at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas.
Last year, the streaming service greenlit a pilot episode for a potential continuation of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, initially called Buffy: New Sunnydale. The plan was to bring Sarah Michelle Gellar back as Buffy Summers, years after the original show finished. Acclaimed director Chloé Zhao (known for films like Nomadland and Eternals) was set to direct, and the script was being developed by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman.
The show’s cast featured Ryan Kiera Armstrong taking on the role of the new slayer, and also included returning favorites Ava Jean, Faly Rakotohavana, Jack Cutmore-Scott, and Sarah Bock.
On March 14th, Sarah Michelle Gellar announced some sad news in an Instagram video. She told her followers directly that Hulu had decided to cancel the planned “Buffy New Sunnydale” reboot. “I’m really sad to share this, but I wanted you to hear it from me,” Gellar said.
Even though things didn’t work out this time, Gellar was thankful to Zhao for helping her remember how much she cares about the character. She said, “Chloe reminded me how much I love her and how important she is to me and to all of you, and that hasn’t changed.” Gellar ended with a famous line from the show, playfully promising, “I still promise, if the apocalypse ever happens, you can still reach me.”
Although the planned ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ reboot on Hulu has been canceled, the franchise isn’t over. Hulu still sees potential in the ‘Buffy’ universe and is reportedly considering other ways to revive the series (according to Deadline).
