Hugh Jackman’s The Death of Robin Hood Confirms Summer Release Date

Hugh Jackman is preparing to play the famous outlaw Robin Hood in a new, intense film called The Death of Robin Hood. Fans won’t have to wait long to see his take on the legendary character.

A24 has announced the film will be released in theaters on June 19th. A first glimpse of the movie was shown in December, and the trailer came out earlier this year.

A quick flash of a weathered, older Robin Hood appeared, then vanished in smoke, immediately followed by the official announcement of the game’s release date and its original logo.

The new film Pig, directed and written by Michael Sarnoski, offers a fresh take on the Robin Hood story. Released in early January, the movie features Hugh Jackman’s character questioning the traditional heroic image of Robin Hood, portraying him instead as a complex figure who did both good and bad.

Haunted by his criminal past, a wounded Robin Hood faces what he believes is his final battle. He’s rescued by a mysterious woman who offers him a chance to heal and start over.

A24’s reimagining of the classic hero features Jodie Comer (known for Killing Eve), Bill Skarsgård (Nosferatu, It), Noah Jupe (A Quiet Place), and Murray Bartlett (The White Lotus).

Hugh Jackman recently shared with Entertainment Weekly that he’s excited about the new take on Robin Hood, praising the script’s exploration of power – specifically, how it can be a force for both positive and negative change.

You know, what really struck me about this version of Robin Hood is how real he feels. It’s not just about adventure; they really lean into his flaws, his past hurts, and even his capacity for love. It gives the character a weight and depth that I found incredibly moving and, honestly, just beautifully human. Mike, the actor, really brought that to life.

Sarnoski described his approach to the latest version, which was filmed in Northern Ireland. He noted that prior knowledge of previous versions isn’t necessary, promising that audiences will easily follow the story. He explained that the actors’ unique and distinct performances will naturally guide viewers to understand this new take on the material.

The Death of Robin Hood Is Not an Action Movie

The director described his take on Robin Hood as a violent criminal who committed many awful acts, even calling him monstrous. But the film explores what happens when this flawed man lives to see legends grow around him, and how he feels about being seen as a hero when he knows the truth about himself.

Although The Death of Robin Hood might appear full of action, the director emphasized it’s not primarily an action film. He mentioned it’s likely quite intense and that viewers will get a good look at Hugh’s physical build. Sarnoski also hinted that the movie will increasingly resemble a war film in tone and scope.

The Death of Robin Hood premieres in theaters on June 19.
