Hugh Jackman Wishes He Had Kicked Wesley Snipes Off ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ for One Specific Reason

Hugh Jackman is famous for playing Wolverine, a role he’s held for 25 years. Even though he seemed to retire the character with the 2019 film Logan, he’s returning for at least one more movie. Interestingly, while filming the upcoming film, Jackman regretted including a particular returning cast member – and the reason is quite funny.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) started in 2008, introducing a new cast to iconic Marvel Comics characters – some of whom had been portrayed by different actors before. As the MCU expanded into multiverse stories, it opened up the exciting possibility of revisiting versions of these characters that hadn’t appeared on screen for many years.

Following the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home bringing back previous Spider-Man actors and villains, Deadpool & Wolverine took it a step further by including Jennifer Garner (as Elektra), Dafne Keene (as X-23), and Wesley Snipes as Blade from older Fox Marvel films. This meant Wesley Snipes, who first played Blade in 1998, surpassed Hugh Jackman as the Marvel actor with the longest history in the role, earning a Guinness World Record. Jackman recently addressed this, stating:

Honestly, if I’d known what was coming, I would have never let him join the Deadpool & Wolverine movie. Now it feels like we’re just waiting to see who will survive the longest. And you know what? I’m betting on Wesley – he’s got this!

Tobey Maguire and Willem Dafoe initially held the record for being the Marvel actors who had played the same characters for the longest time, thanks to their appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Patrick Stewart then took the title with his role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but Hugh Jackman surpassed him by returning as Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine. However, when Wesley Snipes was also confirmed to be in the movie, Jackman’s record-holding status became unimportant.

Wesley Snipes Could Still Return Again as Blade

Walt Disney Studios

For the past six years, Marvel Studios has been trying to get a Blade movie off the ground. Mahershala Ali has been cast in the lead role, but the project has faced difficulties, going through multiple directors and writers who haven’t been able to finalize a compelling story for the vampire hunter.

The situation became more complicated when Wesley Snipes made a cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine, delivering the line, “There is only one Blade, and there will only ever be one Blade.” This was a clever nod to fans who have been following the long and often uncertain development of the Blade reboot.

Recent reports indicate Marvel Studios has cancelled plans for a standalone Blade movie. Instead, they’re planning to introduce Blade as part of a team-up film called Midnight Suns, alongside characters like Werewolf by Night, Man-Thing, and Doctor Strange. There’s also speculation that Wesley Snipes might reprise his role as Blade in the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars movie, but this hasn’t been confirmed. We likely won’t know for sure until closer to the film’s release in December 2027, as it’s expected to conclude the current multiverse saga.
