The season 2 finale of Landman seems to be significantly changing the show’s direction, as Tommy (Billy Bob Thornton) losing his job creates fresh opportunities.
Okay, so Tommy really goes to bat trying to halt Cami Miller’s risky offshore drilling project, and it costs him his job at M-Tex. Honestly, though, getting fired might be the best thing that could’ve happened. It pushes him to finally strike out on his own, launching CTT Oil with his son, Cooper. And let me tell you, for a guy as fiercely independent and headstrong as Tommy, that freedom is absolutely priceless. It’s a great turning point for his character.
I was reading an interview with Brent Lofland over at ScreenRant, and he was talking about how his real-life experience becoming a dad is influencing his character, Cooper, in Landman. He’s hoping that Cooper’s rise to president of CTT Oil will be a turning point for him, allowing him to mature and finally build a stronger connection with his father. It’s cool to see how personal life is shaping the story!
I really hope Cooper continues to mature and grow into a responsible adult. It would be great to see him learn the ropes of the business alongside his dad, with his dad sharing his experience and helping him avoid past mistakes. I’m excited about that possibility and hoping we move forward with that plan. We’ll see what happens.
Lofland shared his enthusiasm for CTT Oil and its involvement in the next season of Landman. He particularly enjoyed filming on the oil rigs. Though details about the third season are still under wraps, the actor is hopeful about the story’s direction and eager to see what happens with the characters.
You know, as a critic, one of my favorite parts of this show is when they’re out on the oil rigs. That’s really where the heart of the story is, especially for Cooper’s character and his journey of building something from the ground up. When I read the scripts, I was thrilled to see that Season Three is leaning even more into that world – the actual work, the challenges, everything. I’m genuinely excited to see where they take it and, honestly, I’m rooting for this company they’re building to really succeed. It’s a compelling part of the narrative, and I can’t wait to see it unfold.
Lofland also touched on the dangers of Cooper starting a business with his father. The show opened with a near-fatal accident on an oil rig, which also brought Cooper and his fiancée, Ariana (Paulina Chávez), together. This immediately showed viewers how risky the oil industry can be, making Cooper’s new venture understandably frightening.
I spoke with Lofland about what drove Cooper’s character, and he explained it all came down to desire. If Cooper truly wanted something, he’d face any obstacle, no matter how dangerous. Lofland really emphasized that living in fear is a dead end – you’ve got to push through it and chase what you believe in. It’s a powerful message, and it really resonated with how Cooper approached everything.
There’s always a risk involved, but you can’t let fear stop you from pursuing this. It’s simply a part of the process – you accept the potential consequences and keep moving forward. When something happens, it happens, and you can only hope it isn’t something you caused.
You can now watch seasons 1 and 2 of Landman on Paramount+. As of today, there’s no confirmed release date for season 3.
