The upcoming live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon is bringing back another actor from the original animated movies. Universal announced the sequel to the live-action film at CinemaCon in April 2025, just before the first live-action How to Train Your Dragon hit theaters. The new film, which is also a remake of the animated sequel How to Train Your Dragon 2, is scheduled to be released on June 11, 2027.
Cate Blanchett is set to return as Valka in the upcoming live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon 2, according to The Hollywood Reporter. She originally voiced the character in the 2014 animated film, where Valka was revealed to be Hiccup’s mother, who had been presumed dead and dedicated her life to rescuing dragons. Blanchett joins Gerard Butler, who is also reprising his role as Stoic from the animated How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, as a returning cast member for the live-action adaptation.
