As a huge fan of How to Train Your Dragon, I was really interested to hear what producer Roy Lee had to say about the upcoming live-action sequel. Apparently, they’re aiming to stay pretty true to the original animated film’s story, which is fantastic news! They’re not planning any major changes, but they are adding a few new elements to keep things fresh and exciting. I’m already getting hyped!
Live-action How To Train Your Dragon 2 ‘will have some new things’
Roy Lee, an executive producer on How To Train Your Dragon 2, has given a first look at the movie’s plans. He says the film will mostly follow the story fans already know and love, but with a few new elements added in.
Lee spoke to Screen Rant about the project, but didn’t share many specifics. He emphasized that the team wants to build on what’s already successful, stating they wouldn’t make any unnecessary changes. While hinting that the next installment will include some fresh elements, he avoided revealing plot details, not wanting to give anything away.
The upcoming movie will continue the story started in the 2025 live-action remake, while also retelling elements from How to Train Your Dragon 2. Dean DeBlois, who has been involved with the franchise for a long time, is back as the writer and director. The cast will include Cate Blanchett returning as Valka, Hiccup’s mother, and will introduce Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as the villain Drago, and Phil Dunster as Eret.
As a huge fan of ‘How to Train Your Dragon,’ I was really interested to hear that DeBlois wanted to stay true to the original animated film when making the live-action version – he even planned on filming some of the most iconic scenes pretty much as we remember them! Of course, there were bound to be changes, and one of the biggest talking points was the casting of Nico Parker as Astrid. DeBlois explained his choice by highlighting Parker’s talent and reminding everyone that, at its heart, this is a fantasy story, so things can be a little different.
The 2025 movie also included some minor story changes, like giving Astrid more action scenes and featuring Valka more prominently.
