How The Timeline In Boston Blue Matches Up With What Happened At The End Of Blue Bloods

A new spin-off series called Boston Blue is expanding the world of Blue Bloods on television in 2025. The show centers on Donnie Wahlberg reprising his role as Detective Danny Reagan, now working with the Boston Police Department, alongside his son Sean, who is a new officer. Although the original Blue Bloods series concluded in December 2024, it wasn’t immediately clear how much time had passed before the events of Boston Blue. Now, one of the show’s producers is sharing some insights on the timeline.

While Boston Blue doesn’t explicitly state how much time has passed since the Blue Bloods finale, it’s clear a significant amount of time has gone by. A key development in Blue Bloods was Danny and Baez becoming a couple, and they are still together in Boston Blue, with Marisa Ramirez already appearing in a few episodes. According to co-showrunner Brandon Margolis, this relationship suggests the time jump isn’t as large as some viewers might expect.

We want the new show, Boston Blue, to feel current, as if it picks up shortly after Blue Bloods ended. In our storyline, it’s been just over a year since the Reagans were last on screen – enough time for Sean to complete his police academy training and become a rookie officer starting his first patrol. We envision that Sean and his partner have been working together for about a year, and things are going smoothly.

Fans really appreciate consistency, so it’s good when showrunners explain how things connect. The relationship between Regan and Baez is a clever way to show the timeline and how different shows within the Blue Bloods world fit together. According to Margolis, who also commented on the romance itself:

So, they’re definitely still an item. He let slip in the first episode that when they hang out at his place, they put their phones on silent, which is cute. It seems like they’re really figuring things out and seeing where this could lead, even if they haven’t moved in together yet.

After a long wait for Danny and Baez to become a couple, it would feel disappointing to rush past important moments like them moving in together. But a time jump works well because it allows their relationship to develop naturally and also shows Sean completing police academy and becoming a rookie – fitting the timeline of the Blue Bloods finale. Ultimately, it all fits together logically.

The show Boston Blue has also signaled the time jump from the Blue Bloods finale through the character of Sean. As we’ve noted, Danny’s youngest son, previously played by Andrew Terraciano throughout all 14 seasons of Blue Bloods, is now portrayed by Mika Amonsen. Brandon Margolis explained they were looking for an actor who looked similar to the character as he aged, but also reflected some changes in his life. Margolis and co-showrunner Brandon Sonnier believed this was a more effective way to integrate the story and show the passage of time.

Paramount+ is a streaming service that offers popular shows like Blue Bloods and Boston Blue. It costs as little as $7.99 per month or $59.99 per year. There are two monthly plans: the Essential plan at $7.99 with ads, and the ad-free Premium plan for $12.99. For even more savings, consider an annual subscription to watch all your favorite shows and movies.

Many shows now use a real-time storytelling approach, so it makes sense that the team behind Boston Blue did the same. While the series might not ever state exactly how much time has passed, viewers know at least a year has gone by. This fits with the fact that Sean is a new police officer just out of the academy when the show begins.

After just a few episodes, Boston Blue is already showing promise. While the show updates the classic family dinner scene, it still feels full of warmth and tradition. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next – new episodes air Fridays at 10 p.m. Eastern on CBS, and are available to stream the following day on Paramount+.
