How Ryan Reynolds Apparently Shaded Justin Baldoni In Message Sent To It Ends With Us Author

Blake Lively is suing Justin Baldoni, her co-star and co-director in the 2024 film It Ends with Us, and the case is heading to court. Recently released legal documents have revealed private conversations related to the movie’s production. These include a letter reportedly written by Lively’s husband, Ryan Reynolds, to author Colleen Hoover, where he strongly criticized Baldoni.

What Did Ryan Reynolds Say About Justin Baldoni In The Message?

Although he wasn’t officially listed in the credits, Ryan Reynolds, 49, is said to have made some changes to the script of It Ends with Us, specifically writing the scene on the rooftop. There are also reports of disagreements between Reynolds and director Justin Baldoni, 41, with some claiming Reynolds modeled the character Nicepool in Deadpool & Wolverine after Baldoni. According to Us Weekly, recently revealed documents show Reynolds was very direct in his criticism of Baldoni in messages to It Ends with Us author Colleen Hoover, 46, after the movie came out.

You and B created something amazing despite not having the resources you needed, which is why you’re both so valuable to the post-production team. I was so sorry to hear you both got sick and are stuck in New York – that sounds awful! Maybe it’s just your bodies getting rid of any lingering stress from working with Baldoni. Honestly, I’d rather be sick anywhere than pretend to be a feminist while trying to figure out how to improve myself.

Reynolds wasn’t alone in his criticism of Baldoni, according to recently released documents. Fellow cast member Jenny Slate also expressed concerns, describing him as a “narcissist” and wanting to avoid him during publicity events. While Reynolds’ comments don’t prove Baldoni was the model for the character Nicepool, his description of the director does align with certain traits of the Marvel character.

How Did Nicepool Get Involved In This Legal Conflict?

More on Justin Baldoni

Newly released legal documents reveal that Justin Baldoni reportedly became emotional and cried while discussing the controversy surrounding his film, “It Ends With Us,” in front of celebrities Hugh Jackman and Taylor Swift. Further details from the documents have also been made public.

Early in 2025, people on social media started pointing out the similarities between actor Justin Baldoni and Ryan Reynolds’ character, Nicepool, from the movie. Both sported longer hair and expressed support for feminist ideas. The character Nicepool also made remarks about Blake Lively’s character, Ladypool, after she had a baby. This sparked conversation because Baldoni had reportedly made similar inappropriate comments about Lively after her pregnancy. At the time, Baldoni was involved in a legal dispute with Reynolds, Lively, and others, claiming extortion and defamation. He later added to his lawsuit, alleging that the character Nicepool was intentionally used to mock him.

In the movie, Lively’s character, Ladypool, kills Nicepool. Interestingly, the actor who played Nicepool was credited as “Gordon Reynolds,” and he also received a thank you in the film It Ends with Us, creating a connection to that project. Initially, Baldoni’s legal team asked Marvel Studios to release all information about the Nicepool character, but this request was dropped when Baldoni’s lawsuit was dismissed.

In December 2024, Blake Lively sued Justin Baldoni and his production company, Wayfarer Studios. She alleged that Baldoni sexually harassed her during filming and then tried to damage her reputation. Lively officially filed the lawsuit, but Baldoni denied the accusations and responded with a countersuit – which has since been dropped – seeking $400 million in damages.

As more documents are reviewed, we’re still discovering new information related to the Lively and Baldoni case, and it’s unclear what else might come to light. It’s also uncertain whether any specific details about Nicepool will be revealed. The trial for Baldoni and Lively is scheduled to begin on May 18, 2026.
