A major question hanging over season 2 of Hazbin Hotel was whether characters could actually be redeemed. We now have an answer thanks to Sir Pentious, who successfully reached Heaven. However, the angels themselves seemed just as shocked by his arrival as the viewers were.

The latest episode of Hazbin Hotel season 2 reveals Sir Pentious’s backstory and how he ended up in the Happy Hotel, also exploring the possibility of redemption. While some questions remain, viewers now have a better understanding of what Charlie needs to do to successfully rehabilitate sinners and send them to Heaven.

Sir Pentious Is The First Soul Ever Redeemed In Hazbin Hotel

For a long time, it was believed that no one in Hell could ever be redeemed. However, in season 2, episode 2 of Hazbin Hotel, titled “Storyteller,” it’s revealed that Sir Pentious was actually the very first soul to earn redemption. Even the angels, including the highest-ranking ones, never thought a soul destined for Hell could legitimately make it to Heaven.

He’s been accused of infiltrating the angelic court – all the angels except Emily, that is. But actually, he accomplished something incredible and rightfully earned his position there. This makes his past and the events at the end of season 1 crucial for understanding how characters can find redemption in Hazbin Hotel and the broader Helluvaverse.

How Sir Pentious Was Redeemed In Hazbin Hotel, Explained

Sir Pentious’s path to becoming a better person is tied to events from his past life on Earth. He reveals that he was a loner who spent most of his time indoors, but he enjoyed observing people from his window. One day, he witnessed a terrible crime: a man murdered a woman, and this event deeply affected him.

I’ve been studying his story, and it’s chilling. He clearly witnessed the very first murder committed by Jack the Ripper – he actually saw the killer’s face! But unbelievably, he did absolutely nothing. He just stood by, silent, as more and more victims fell. It’s that selfish inaction, that pure cowardice, that ultimately led to his damnation and landed him here in Hell. It’s a truly disturbing tale.

During his time at the Hazbin Hotel, Sir Pentious sincerely tried to improve himself. Despite his past sins, he was kind and considerate. However, he didn’t earn his way to Heaven until he bravely overcame his fears and saved someone’s life.

In season 2 of Hazbin Hotel, the Speaker of God, a newly introduced character, decides that Sir Pentious is redeemed. She believes he earned this redemption by making amends for his past actions. Given her position as the Speaker of God, it’s likely she’s right about how Sir Pentious found salvation.

Redemption Isn’t Just About Being A Good Person In Hazbin Hotel

According to divine teachings, simply being a good person isn’t enough to earn forgiveness. ‘Good’ is open to interpretation, and true redemption requires addressing and making amends for the specific wrongdoings that led to punishment.

While still open to interpretation, the idea is becoming clearer. Sir Pentious found redemption through acts of bravery and selflessness, balancing out his past selfishness and cowardice. Essentially, someone might need to demonstrate the opposite of their past failings to earn a place in Heaven – a thief could need to be generous, a liar truthful, and so forth.

The rules aren’t clear when it comes to serious sins shown in Hazbin Hotel season 1, like cannibalism or murder. It’s also difficult to understand how they’d apply to unchangeable parts of someone’s identity, such as being LGBTQ+. However, Pentious’s journey towards redemption offers a possible solution, and future episodes of Hazbin Hotel could explain these details as the story unfolds.

Charlie’s Hazbin Hotel Will Need To Expand Past “Good Person” Lessons To Work

In the first two episodes, Charlie is unaware of the true requirements for redemption. But once she understands how it really works, she’ll have to rethink her methods at the hotel. Simply encouraging sinners with upbeat songs won’t be enough to help them earn a place in Heaven.

As a fan, I think the therapy sessions in Hazbin Hotel are genuinely great because they give everyone a chance to look at what they’ve done wrong and work on themselves. But those role-playing lessons Sir Pentious and Angel Dust went through in season one? I don’t think that approach would work for all the characters, honestly. It felt a little too specific to their situations.

Okay, so Hazbin Hotel really makes you think. It’s not a one-size-fits-all path to redemption here – what helps a gambling addict turn their life around is going to be wildly different than what someone struggling with pornography needs. Ultimately, Charlie’s core belief – that sinners can be saved – is actually proven to work in the show, but she’s going to have to get a lot more personal and tailor her approach if she wants to truly help everyone she’s taken in. It’s a smart move for the narrative, and makes the whole concept feel much more grounded, even with the crazy premise!
