How Much Was Colleen Hoover Involved In The Regretting You Movie After ‘She Had Such A Tumultuous Time’ On It Ends With Us

We’re always interested in seeing how book-to-movie adaptations turn out, and how much the original author is involved, if they’re still alive. One upcoming 2025 film based on a popular book is Regretting You, by Colleen Hoover. But how much input did the author have on the movie’s production?

J.J. Hoover is credited as an executive producer on the film Regretting You, but director Josh Boone told me her role in making the movie was quite small. He went on to explain:

All I really hoped was that Colleen would enjoy the movie, and thankfully, she did – that was a huge relief. She’d been through a lot with the previous project, and I just wanted this to be a good experience for her. I didn’t want to pressure her or try to win her over. I focused on giving her space and just making the movie. I didn’t need anything from her personally; I already had the source material. She’s wonderful, but I preferred to keep things professional and avoid getting caught up in anything more.

Boone is likely referring to Colleen Hoover’s involvement with last year’s It Ends With Us, where she served as an executive producer. Reports suggest she played a significant role in the film’s creation and even made a brief appearance. However, given the ongoing legal dispute between the film’s producer and star, Blake Lively, and its director and star, Justin Baldoni, it makes sense that Hoover might have chosen a less hands-on role this time around.

Austin Hoover participated in the publicity events for It Ends With Us, which received a lot of attention and placed the author at the center of some controversy. Boone also shared details about the creation of Regretting You:

The movie was produced by Brunson Green, who also produced ‘The Help’ – he’s honestly the best producer I’ve ever worked with. He collaborated with Flavia Viotti and Anna Todd on this project, and they both knew Colleen Hoover. Anna is the author of the ‘After’ series, so she’s known Colleen for a long time. Because of their connections, I was able to stay somewhat separate from everything, and they handled all of that.

It seems the film Regretting You benefited from a strong team of experienced producers, which allowed Colleen Hoover to confidently let them bring her story to life. Having author Anna Todd as an executive producer was also a great asset. Director Josh Boone, known for his 2014 adaptation of The Fault In Our Stars, shared his enthusiasm for adapting Hoover’s 2019 novel.

I think all my films, in some way, explore the journey from youth to adulthood. This theme was present even in my first movie, ‘Stuck in Love,’ which, like many of my projects, looks at the relationships between parents and their children, and how their love lives intersect. I’m particularly fascinated by that moment when teenagers begin to see their parents as complex people with their own histories and sacrifices – realizing they aren’t perfect and have lives beyond being parents.
