The upcoming Hunger Games film, titled The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, will feature the return of Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson. The actors famously played Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark in the original four Hunger Games movies, which concluded with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 in 2015.
The world of The Hunger Games is expanding, with author Suzanne Collins writing two new prequel books. Both of these are being made into movies. Recently, it was announced that Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson will return for Sunrise on the Reaping, a new movie focusing on Haymitch Abernathy’s experiences during the 50th Hunger Games.
The prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping, is set before the events of the main Hunger Games series, which might lead some to wonder how familiar characters could appear. However, the book provides a simple explanation for their presence.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping Book Set Up Katniss & Peeta’s Return
Most of Sunrise on the Reaping doesn’t feature Katniss and Peeta, but Collins chose to include them briefly at the conclusion. The book ends with an epilogue showing Haymitch as an adult, after the revolution and the events of Mockingjay – Part 2.
This section focuses on Katniss and Peeta’s return, and Haymitch’s memories of his own time in the Games. He thinks about a promise he made to a woman named Lenore Dove to care for her family, and now sees Katniss and Peeta as his own. The text shows small, touching moments between them – like Katniss bringing Haymitch eggs and Peeta building an incubator.
This explains how Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence’s characters will be featured in Sunrise on the Reaping. It’s also why fans have been speculating about their return for a while, even before this was officially announced. Excitingly, the movie version might even expand on the story in the book.
In the book’s ending, Katniss and Peeta are both quiet, and their conversation with Haymitch is brief. However, since Lionsgate has asked Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson to film additional scenes with Woody Harrelson, the movie version will likely show a more extended and impactful reunion between the three of them.
The new movie continues the story after the end of Mockingjay – Part 2, where Katniss and Peeta were shown happily raising their children. Since Haymitch wasn’t included in that final scene, this movie’s ending brings all three main characters together, potentially giving the Hunger Games franchise a satisfying conclusion if this is the final installment.
Having Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson reprise their roles as Katniss and Peeta in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping feels natural given the story, and it allows the series to explore what happened to them after the rebellion – a storyline that connects nicely with Haymitch’s story in the earlier film.
