How I Met Your Mother Is Leaving Netflix in December

Sitcoms really hit their stride in the late 1990s and early 2000s, changing the genre with shows about groups of friends navigating life, love, and laughter in New York City. Luckily, when one incredibly popular show finished its ten-season run, another was ready to step up and fill the void.

The popular sitcom How I Met Your Mother first aired on September 19, 2005. Although the initial season received mixed reactions, later seasons were universally loved by both critics and audiences. Unfortunately, fans will soon no longer be able to stream the show on Netflix, as it’s being removed on December 3rd, according to What’s on Netflix.

With 208 episodes across nine seasons, catching up on the entire show might be a big commitment, but there’s plenty of time to enjoy fan favorites like “Subway Wars” and “The Pineapple Incident.”

How I Met Your Mother stood out from other sitcoms because it didn’t tell its story in a straight line. It started in the future with Ted Mosby (played by Josh Radnor), an architect and professor, recounting how he met his wife to his kids. The show itself is essentially a long story he’s telling them.

Ted spends his time with his close friends: Marshall Eriksen, a law student; Lily Aldrin, his longtime girlfriend; Barney Stinson, a fun-loving womanizer; and Robin Scherbatsky, a Canadian journalist. The show follows this group as they deal with the funny and relatable challenges of being in their twenties and thirties – everything from breakups and career changes to awkward dates and figuring out life’s big questions. How I Met Your Mother captures all the chaos and emotions that come with growing up.

How I Met Your Mother Can Be Dated, But It Is Still Worth Watching

Over time, the comedy How I Met Your Mother has faced criticism for its humor and storylines. For example, Barney’s often manipulative schemes to meet women, and even Ted’s past treatment of his ex-girlfriends, haven’t aged well as viewers become more aware of issues surrounding gender and equality.

The show Friends faced similar issues. While it wasn’t perfect, it also reflected the norms of the time. Today, many viewers criticize the fat shaming directed at Monica, but How I Met Your Mother often used even more offensive jokes.

It’s become harder for people to enjoy the show now compared to when it first came out, when How I Met Your Mother was a huge hit. While lines like Barney’s famous “Legen – wait for it – dary!” and his love of suits were incredibly popular then, the show is mostly enjoyed as a nostalgic throwback today.

How I Met Your Mother is available to stream on Netflix till Dec. 3.
