Fans of *Murder in a Small Town* will be happy to hear it’s coming back in fall 2025! The new season will explore whether Alberg (Rossif Sutherland) and Cassandra (Kristin Kreuk) continued their relationship after the events of season one. But with a title like that, romance isn’t the only focus – the first eight episodes saw a lot of deaths in the town of Gibsons. As the September 23rd premiere approaches, the cast has been asked how the show plans to keep the murder mystery going in such a small location.
One of the appealing things about this show is its setting in a small, quiet town. But realistically, wouldn’t the residents start to wonder why so many murders are happening in a place like that? I recently spoke with Rossif Sutherland and Kristin Kreuk about the show’s second season (now available on Hulu), and I had to ask them about the unusually high number of killings in Gibsons. Kristin Kreuk, known from *Smallville*, explained:
There are a couple of reasons for this. First, Karl’s area of responsibility has grown this year – he’s now in charge of a much larger coastal region, not just Gibsons. Second, we need to remember this isn’t a realistic scenario, so trying to find logical explanations for such a dramatic crime increase in a small town doesn’t really make sense. So, both things are true: we’re giving the show more room for crimes to happen, and we also need to accept that it’s a heightened, fictional situation, like many small-town murder mysteries.
Within the show’s story, Season 2 has broadened Alberg’s area of responsibility to include four additional towns besides Gibsons, meaning the murders won’t systematically eliminate everyone in the original town. More importantly, because the Fox series isn’t based on real-life crimes, viewers can simply relax and enjoy the fictional mystery. Actor Rossif Sutherland playfully suggested that there might be a problem if people started taking the show *too* seriously and reacted as if the murders were actually happening, joking about how the public might respond to a sudden spike in deaths.
It seems contradictory to describe this place as peaceful when so many people are being killed. I wondered if the constant violence would make it impossible to sell property, trapping residents here and perpetuating the cycle of killings. If nobody wants to live somewhere dangerous, property values would plummet and people wouldn’t be able to leave.
If you’re looking for affordable housing, Gibsons might be a good option! While there’s a slightly higher chance of an unusual death, a clip from Season 2 of the show points out that Alberg had a remarkably high success rate in solving cases. So, at least your mystery would likely be solved, even in the worst-case scenario.
Gibson is a major character in *Murder in a Small Town*, just like Alberg and Cassandra. I’m really interested to see how Season 2 feels now that his authority is growing. It seems like he might face challenges building up his police force, especially with Marcia Gay Harden playing the town mayor.
Now that Cassandra is an elected official in Gibsons, she’ll have a much bigger role in Season 2. She won’t just be Alberg’s girlfriend, the town librarian, or someone who gets taken hostage – she’ll be actively involved in the town’s happenings. Here’s a preview of what’s to come!
Don’t miss the Season 2 premiere of *Murder in a Small Town* on Fox, Tuesday, September 23rd at 8 p.m. Eastern. The episode, titled “Acts of Murder,” will be followed by the return of *Doc* at 9 p.m. Eastern. Need to catch up? All eight episodes from Season 1 are currently available on Hulu.
