Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord episodes 1-2
The relationship between Darth Sidious and Darth Maul is one of the most intense and complicated in the entire Star Wars saga. While Maul began as Sidious/Palpatine’s apprentice in The Phantom Menace (1999), he eventually became a rival after being brought back to life during the Clone Wars. The new Maul – Shadow Lord series explores Maul’s current quest for revenge against Sidious, fueled by feelings of betrayal.
Even though Darth Sidious seemingly died and was replaced in The Phantom Menace, his manipulation of Darth Maul runs much deeper. This is revealed in the Clone Wars animated series and further explored in official comics.
With new stories revealing more of Darth Maul’s life after the events of Star Wars, and his development of a new master plan, it’s crucial to remember how his former Sith master, Palpatine, betrayed him. This betrayal is why Maul has always sought revenge against Palpatine, right alongside his hatred for Obi-Wan Kenobi.
In Shadow Lord, Darth Maul Has A Grand Plan For Those Who Betrayed Him (Including Darth Sidious)
The first two episodes of Maul – Shadow Lord show that the former Sith Lord is back to carefully planning and making big moves within the galaxy’s criminal underworld. Taking place a year after Palpatine established the Galactic Empire, Maul has been working in secret, trying to stay hidden for as long as he can.
Maul is actively creating conflict between powerful crime lords, driven by his desire for revenge against those who left him during the final days of the Clone Wars. He reveals that his quest for vengeance extends beyond just his former allies – he’s also targeting his old master, Darth Sidious, and anyone else who ever betrayed him.
Darth Sidious Betrayed Maul By Replacing Him (And Killing His Family)
Darth Maul, once the promising apprentice of the future Emperor, was abandoned after his defeat by Obi-Wan Kenobi during the Battle of Naboo in The Phantom Menace. Believed to be dead after being cut in half, Maul was left for nearly ten years to rebuild himself in exile on the desolate junk planet of Lotho Minor, physically and emotionally broken, while Darth Sidious found new followers like Count Dooku.
During the Clone Wars, Maul was saved by his brother, Savage Opress. The Nightsister Mother Talzin helped restore both his physical and mental state. With Savage as his student, Maul built up power within the criminal underworld, driven by a desire for revenge. This eventually led to him seizing control of the planet Mandalore.
Darth Maul’s growing strength eventually caught the eye of Darth Sidious, who decided to confront him directly. Sidious journeyed to Mandalore, where he effortlessly defeated Maul and his brother, Savage. He killed Savage outright, then captured Maul to be imprisoned and subjected to torture.
Maul ultimately escaped thanks to the comic series Son of Dathomir, which was based on scripts originally written for the Clone Wars TV show – but this was all part of Sidious’s plan to lure out Mother Talzin. While Maul managed to briefly overpower and capture both Dooku and General Grievous, his second duel with Darth Sidious during the Clone Wars led to Talzin sacrificing herself to save her son, Maul.
Okay, so the story really ramps up with the final arc of The Clone Wars, specifically ‘The Siege of Mandalore’. We see Maul making one last desperate play to throw a wrench in Palpatine’s schemes, aiming right for Anakin Skywalker, but it ultimately fails. Then, in Shadow Lord, which picks up a year later, Maul’s still plotting against his former master. This time, it’s not about strategy, it’s personal – he’s completely focused on making Palpatine pay for everything he did to him as an apprentice. It’s a really compelling look at a villain fueled by betrayal and revenge.
Will Maul Face His Old Master In Future Episodes Of Shadow Lord?
Given everything that’s happened, it’s worth wondering if Maul will ever face Darth Sidious again in the Star Wars story.
In addition to the first two parts, previews of Maul: Shadow Lord show Maul fighting two Imperial Inquisitors.
As a critic, I see a clear setup here: Darth Maul showing up on Janix is almost certainly going to bring the Empire down on them. And it’s not just speculation – we actually hear an Inquisitor tell Maul straight to his face in the trailers for Shadow Lord that the Emperor has ordered his execution. It’s a pretty direct threat, and sets up some serious conflict to come.
Considering what we’ve seen in Star Wars lore, Palpatine (Sidious) isn’t afraid to directly intervene when Darth Maul becomes powerful enough, hinting at a potential showdown in future installments of Shadow Lord, or even the already-approved second season. While it’s established that Maul will ultimately fail, a new duel between him and Palpatine would still be incredibly exciting to watch.
New episodes of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord release Mondays on Disney+ from Lucasfilm Animation.
