Ryan Coogler recently revealed exciting news about the upcoming reboot of The X-Files, explaining how Vince Gilligan played a key role. Gilligan, known for creating Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, and Pluribus, previously worked on the original X-Files for Fox, contributing as a writer, director, and executive producer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ryan Coogler is currently writing the scripts for the new X-Files series. He’s said his mother’s fondness for the original show motivated him to take the job. Coogler, the director of Black Panther, admitted to the outlet that he sometimes feels overwhelmed by the pressure of meeting deadlines.
Ryan Coogler and Vince Gilligan first connected in France at the Deauville American Film Festival in 2013, where Coogler learned about Gilligan’s work on The X-Files. Several years later, when Coogler was developing the reboot, he reached out to Gilligan for guidance. “Vince spent a couple of hours giving me advice over Zoom and answered all my questions,” Coogler shared. “I still refer back to my notes from that conversation often.”
Coogler has mentioned speaking with Gilligan about television before. He shared with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that Gilligan gave him guidance on creating TV shows.
The X-Files first appeared on Fox from September 1993 to May 2002, running for nine seasons. The show later returned with two additional seasons in 2016 and 2018. The main cast included David Duchovny as Fox Mulder, Gillian Anderson as Dana Scully, Robert Patrick as John Doggett, Annabeth Gish as Monica Reyes, William B. Davis as the Cigarette Smoking Man, and Mitch Pileggi as Walter Skinner.
It’s still unknown if David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will return as their characters in the new Disney version of the show. There’s no confirmed release date yet.
