When Kristen asks why they’re being targeted, the attacker – Dollface – coldly responds, “because you were home,” reinforcing the fact that there was no underlying motive. They’re acting on impulse, doing it simply because they are able to and because they want to. It’s a truly unsettling concept.

Ten years after the first movie, in 2018, a sequel was finally released to eager fans. Although it didn’t receive the same praise as the original, the sequel was still solid, continuing to show the destruction caused by the strangers and giving the main characters an opportunity to retaliate. The film ultimately showed the strangers being defeated, leading many viewers to believe that the series would conclude with Prey at Night.

The Strangers: Chapter 1 Resurrected the Franchise

Following the intense events of The Stranger: Prey at Night, many viewers didn’t think the series would continue. However, in 2024, The Strangers: Chapter 1 surprised everyone. Initially, fans thought this new movie would be a prequel, exploring the background of the masked killers or detailing their first crime. But Chapter 1 turned out to be a complete restart of the franchise. What’s also interesting is that the film really focuses on the townspeople, and a lot of them seem to really dislike outsiders for no clear reason. It makes you wonder if they’re all involved in something shady, especially considering the movie opens with those strangers killing another traveler. It definitely feels like something’s not right in Venus, and I’m eager to find out what it is!

To be honest, The Strangers: Chapter 1 shares quite a few story similarities with the original film. While it’s not a complete remake – it centers on new characters and includes some plot adjustments – some might consider it remake-like. A lot of fans disliked this aspect of the movie, but I believe director Renny Harlin made a smart choice. When Chapter 1 was initially announced, Harlin stated it would be the first of three films, and was always intended to serve as the basis for the entire trilogy.

The Reboot Trilogy Wouldn’t Work Without the Chapter 1 Reboot

The Strangers: Chapter 2 (2025) was released on September 26, 2025, following Maya’s near-death experience and hospitalization. Chapter 3 will conclude the story. This rebooted trilogy doesn’t simply intend to recreate the original movie; director Harlin’s primary intention was to expand upon the narrative established by Bryan Bertino’s film. Harlin’s take goes beyond frightening just one couple; it explores the broader world that created the strangers and explains how they repeatedly evade justice for their crimes.

Because of this, Chapter 1 was designed to closely resemble the first film. This shows how much The Strangers inspired Harlin, leading him to envision a much bigger story. While he might have been able to skip Chapter 1 – as fans were already familiar with the basic plot – doing so would have lessened the impact of the entire trilogy. The film was crucial for showcasing the strangers’ enjoyment of violence and cruelty, and their tendency to torment victims simply because they can. The reboot successfully used many of the techniques that made the original so effective, such as avoiding excessive gore while still featuring a significant number of deaths. It also skillfully recreated the same feeling of unease, with the strangers moving in and out of the house unnoticed by Maya and Ryan.
