A thrilling new movie, often compared to a dark and fantastical blend of The Wizard of Oz and Texas Chainsaw Massacre, will be available on Hulu next week.
Both the visually stunning musical The Wizard of Oz (1939) and the terrifying horror film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) are considered all-time classics and have had a huge impact on filmmaking. Now, Hulu is releasing a new thriller that surprisingly combines elements of both these iconic movies next week.
Next week, Hulu will start streaming Pearl, the prequel to the horror film X. Directed by Ti West and co-written with Mia Goth (who also stars as Pearl), the A24 slasher film delves into the backstory of its central villain. It shows how Pearl’s aspirations of Hollywood stardom clash with the difficulties of family and her increasingly violent tendencies while living on a Texas farm in 1918.
After debuting in theaters in 2022, the film Pearl will be available to stream on Hulu starting August 1st. Currently, it isn’t offered on any other streaming services, but you can purchase or rent it digitally from platforms like Prime Video for as little as $3.99.
Besides Mia Goth as Pearl, the film also stars David Corenswet, known for his role in Superman, along with Tandi Wright, Matthew Sunderland, Emma Jenkins-Purro, Amelia Reid-Meredith, and Alistair Sewell.
As a critic, I have to say Pearl is genuinely impressive. It’s earned incredibly high marks – a whopping 93% on Rotten Tomatoes! What really struck me is how director Ti West managed to expand upon the already unsettling world he created in last year’s X, finding even more terrifying layers within it. And, like with X, Mia Goth delivers another phenomenal performance; she truly carries this film.
Hannah Bradford, writing for The Fordham Ram, called the movie Pearl a fascinating mix of styles, comparing it to “The Wizard of Oz meets Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” She highlighted how the film successfully combines the bright, colorful look of classic musicals with the thrills of a slasher horror movie.
Audiences generally loved Pearl, giving it an 83% rating. While the story has some bumps, most viewers agreed that Mia Goth’s incredible performance truly made the film stand out. It’s a haunting and unforgettable horror movie thanks to both her acting and Ti West’s creepy direction.
As a movie fan, I was really curious about how Pearl did financially. It made a little over $10 million worldwide, which sounds great – especially if the rumors are true that it only cost around $1 million to make. However, I’ve also heard from others, including one of the producers, that the final cost was closer to $8 million when you factor in things like back-end deals and tax breaks. That changes things quite a bit, and means it probably wasn’t quite as big a hit as first thought.
Whether you’re drawn to the horror, the unique visuals, or Mia Goth’s incredible acting, Pearl is coming to Hulu with its unsettling and captivating story.
