A popular animated movie on Netflix, which received very positive reviews (97% on Rotten Tomatoes), might be getting a sequel. The 2021 sci-fi comedy was praised for being funny, heartwarming, and visually appealing, and sources say a follow-up is currently in development, though details are still secret.
The Mitchells vs. the Machines 2 rumored to be in works
A sequel to the animated movie *The Mitchells vs. the Machines* is supposedly being made, according to a post by the X (formerly Twitter) user MyTimeToShineHello, who is known for accurate reporting. Mike Rianda, who directed the original 2021 film, is expected to be involved.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller produced the film through Columbia Pictures, Sony Pictures Animation, and their own production company, Lord Miller Productions. The movie is about an unusual family who has to save the world from robots taking over.
Originally intended for movie theaters, *The Mitchells vs. the Machines* premiered on Netflix on April 30, 2021, after Sony decided to release it directly to streaming due to the pandemic. It quickly became a hit, reaching 53 million households within its first month on the platform.
The film was highly praised for its animation, funny moments, and positive portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters. It received nominations for major awards like the Oscars and BAFTAs, and won several prizes at the Annie and Critics Choice Awards.
During a 2021 interview with Fandango, director Mike Rianda suggested they were considering a sequel. He mentioned having several promising ideas and had begun initial discussions with others about it.
He also talked about how much creative control the filmmakers had, saying they were given a lot of leeway by the studio. They essentially decided to prioritize what the audience wanted, rather than taking direction solely from studio executives.
The voice cast included Abbi Jacobson, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Eric André, Olivia Colman, and the film’s director, Mike Rianda. Mark Mothersbaugh created the music. If made, a sequel would continue one of Netflix’s most popular and highly-rated animated successes.
