While it was once Apple TV+’s biggest hit, the show is now seeing a drop in viewers after the premiere of Idris Elba’s new crime drama. Season two of Hijack began streaming on January 14th.
Just a day after it first aired, Hijack became the most popular show on Apple TV, surpassing Pluribus, according to data from FlixPatrol. As of January 15th, Pluribus has dropped to second place, and another show has fallen even further to fourth.
The series Hijack, starring Idris Elba, has received mixed reviews. Critics gave it a 75% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but viewers were less impressed, giving it a score of 51%. The show, which debuted in 2023, centers around Sam Nelson (Elba), a negotiator who tries to resolve a hijacking peacefully using his expert skills.
In Season 2, Sam finds himself dealing with another hijacking – this time, it’s a train in Germany. He uses his skills to try and negotiate a peaceful resolution and save everyone on board.
Katie Doll described Season 2 of Hijack as starting strong but quickly becoming repetitive and less engaging than the first season. She felt it lacked thematic depth and felt disjointed overall.
The series Hijack was created by Jim Field Smith and George Kay, and features Idris Elba alongside Ben Miles (Andor), Christine Adams (Black Lightning), and Neil Maskell (Kill List). Season 2 will introduce new cast members including Christian Näthe, Christine Adams, Max Beesley, Archie Panjabi, Karima McAdams, and Christiane Paul.
Pluribus is Breaking Records
Apple TV+’s biggest hit to date is Pluribus, surpassing the popularity of Hijack. Eddy Cue, a senior executive at Apple, announced this week that Pluribus, featuring Rhea Seehorn, Karolina Wydra, and Carlos Manuel Vesga, has become the platform’s most-watched series. Critics have praised the show, giving it a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences have given it a 66% rating.
Pluribus, the new series from Vince Gilligan, creator of Breaking Bad, has been picked up for another season. Rhea Seehorn, who recently won a Golden Globe for her role as Carol Sturka, shared at the awards show that the show’s creators are
Seehorn shared that Gilligan is eager to resume work on the show. He’s keen to move forward quickly and isn’t deliberately delaying things. However, he wants to ensure the show is made with the care and attention his fans deserve, so they’ll return to production as soon as possible.
