The second half of Season 2 kicks off with Morgan (Kaitlin Olson) and her team investigating an art theft, leaving viewers eager to find out what happens next. The midseason finale of High Potential, available on Hulu, reveals a surprising twist: Morgan suspects that Rhys (Aiden Turner), the charming art recovery expert, might actually be a talented art thief.
The beginning of the season raises a lot of questions, especially if Morgan’s doubts are justified and whether she’ll share what she’s found. The first episode back from the midseason break provides answers to these mysteries, but it also sets up new ones, leaving viewers eager to see what happens next.
Be warned! This contains spoilers for Season 2, Episode 8 of High Potential, titled “The One That Got Away: Part Two.” Continue reading at your own risk.

Morgan Letting Rhys Go Could Potentially Come Back To Hurt Her
The episode concludes with Morgan realizing Rhys is actually Jean Baptiste. Though she could report him to the police, Rhys manages to convince her – using his charisma and appealing to her instincts – that his motive for stealing the painting was to give it back to its original owners. Morgan’s decision to trust him proves correct, as he ultimately returns the painting to Miriam (Rita Zohar) and her family.
Morgan makes a mistake and breaks the law, even though she meant well. While this could create problems for her down the road, I don’t think it will be a big deal for the rest of High Potential Season 2. I’d be surprised if it caused any serious issues, though it’s possible we’ll see some consequences later on.
Jean Baptiste might reappear because he committed another crime, and Morgan may have to admit she’s known about it all along. Karadec is willing to bend the rules for Morgan, but he’ll likely be upset she helped a criminal escape. If Wagner finds out what Morgan did, she could lose her job as a consultant, possibly just for a while. While letting Rhys go might not seem like a big deal now, it could cause serious problems down the line.

It Reminds Viewers That Morgan Plays By Her Own Rules
If you’ve been following High Potential, it’s not surprising that Morgan bent the law to help someone. She only follows rules when they align with her own strong sense of right and wrong. While she works with the police to help people, she’s not motivated by recognition, rewards, or a blind faith in the system.
Look, she’s a genuinely good person – she just wants to help people, plain and simple. And sometimes, that means bending or even breaking the rules. When she let Rhys go, it was about doing what she thought was right for Miriam. Honestly, I don’t think she even feels bad about operating outside the law. She’s got this strong moral compass and is so sure of herself that she won’t let legal boundaries get in the way of what she believes is just.
Todd Harthan, showrunner for High Potential, told TVLine that this moment clearly demonstrates Morgan isn’t a typical crime solver, and is different from her colleagues.
Morgan’s actions consistently set her apart from others, even her colleagues in law enforcement.
What really grabs me about Morgan is that she’s unlike any detective I’ve seen before. So many crime shows rely on the same ‘genius consultant’ trope, but she completely breaks the mold. She’s willing to go to places – and do things – that other characters like her just wouldn’t even consider, and that’s what makes High Potential so interesting to me.
We love Morgan because she’s unpredictable and doesn’t conform to expectations – she always keeps things interesting. Her recent decision regarding Rhys perfectly illustrates this quality; she’s far more captivating than someone who simply follows the rules.

High Potential Left The Door Open For Rhys To Return
I loved the connection between Rhys and Morgan and was hoping they’d have a brief romance, even though I knew Morgan would likely end up with Karadec or Wagner. However, when Morgan finds out he’s been dishonest and might be using her, that possibility disappears.
If Morgan and Rhys became a couple, it might look like she was helping him with something shady. Despite that, I’m still hoping they get together, though it probably won’t happen. Still, their connection doesn’t feel completely finished.
It’s likely we haven’t seen the last of Rhys on High Potential. He could reappear to assist with future investigations or even become involved in another art crime. The show’s creator, Harthan, has hinted at a return, suggesting the show’s length allows for revisiting characters and exploring further storylines. While he won’t be back this season, a future appearance is possible. I’m hoping Rhys becomes a regular, recurring character!
Perhaps Kaitlin Olson could draw inspiration from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and bring the character back for at least one episode each season.

Morgan’s Decision Makes Me Wonder If She Could Do Something Like This Again In Future Seasons
Allowing Rhys to leave probably won’t cause Morgan major problems. He’s just an art thief, not involved in anything more serious like drugs or violence. Still, Morgan’s choice could set a bad precedent and show weakness if others follow suit. And with Roman still investigating, we don’t know what she might do to find out the truth.
She might take increasingly risky actions to locate him, which could have serious repercussions for herself, her colleagues, and loved ones. While she likely won’t intentionally break the law, once she starts bending the rules, things could quickly become complicated. Even a seemingly minor choice, like letting someone off the hook, could have unforeseen and widespread consequences.

Her Choice Made The Midseason Premiere Slightly More Entertaining
I have mixed feelings about Season 2 of High Potential. While some episodes have been really good and I appreciate the new directions the show is taking, others haven’t been very exciting. Episode 8, “The One That Got Away: Part Two,” is decent, but I was hoping for more from the midseason premiere.
A highlight of the story so far is Morgan’s choice to let Rhys go, which really raises the tension. It makes me wonder if we’ll see more bold moves like that throughout the rest of Season 2. I’m hoping Morgan continues to rebel and operate outside the law, and that Karadec will once again overlook her actions if it ultimately benefits their goals.
The recent ruling in the Rhys case adds depth to the storyline in “The One That Got Away: Part Two,” and could make the rest of the season even more captivating.
High Potential airs Tuesdays on ABC.
