High Potential’s Amirah J Told Me How Kaitlin Olson Makes The ABC Drama More Realistic, And It Shows

If you haven’t finished watching Season 2 of High Potential on ABC or Hulu, be careful! The following information contains spoilers.

It seems like only yesterday that Kaitlin Olson returned as Morgan Gillory, brilliantly outsmarting everyone – including the LAPD’s criminals and me! – with her incredible memory. But the midseason finale is quickly approaching, and we still don’t know what Roman had in his backpack. At least Morgan and Ava have patched things up, though that doesn’t necessarily mean the teen will keep her promises.

I really appreciate how realistically High Potential portrays parent-child relationships. It feels true to life, reflecting my own experiences growing up and now as a parent – a refreshing change from the over-the-top or overly subdued depictions we often see on TV. When Amirah J, a co-star on the show, spoke with TopMob before the Season 2 finale, I asked her about their on-screen mother-daughter dynamic. She shared that working with Olson, who pays close attention to detail, makes the experience even better.

She’s incredibly natural and makes acting so effortless. She really collaborated with me on the scenes, constantly asking for my opinion – things like, ‘Would this dialogue sound realistic? Would a teenager actually talk like this? Can we tweak it?’ She’d ask what I would say, or what my character, Ava, would do in a given situation, all to make our on-screen relationship feel authentic and like a real mother-daughter connection.

It’s fantastic that Kaitlin Olson is doing what should be standard practice in television – having writers who are closer in age to the characters they’re writing. While she’s not the first actor-producer to take this approach, the characters of Ava and Morgan feel genuinely realistic as both people and a mother and teen. (I admit my own mother wasn’t quite as knowledgeable as Morgan seems to be, so it’s not totally relatable!)

Amirah J seemed very happy when discussing Olson. When I asked if her own family life was similar to that of her character in High Potential, the actress jokingly pointed out that her character faced much more dangerous situations.

It’s hard to directly compare the show to my own life, mainly because the characters Ava and Morgan deal with situations my mom and I don’t. But Kaitlin, the actress who plays her, is amazing. She’s a mom herself, with two kids, and that really shines through when she’s working on set.

Kaitlin Olson isn’t just an actor in High Potential; she’s also a producer, which means she helps keep things running smoothly on set. While producing involves many tasks, it seems she especially enjoys working with the younger cast members. Amirah J shared a sweet story illustrating this, saying:

Even off camera, she’s incredibly caring and always checks in on my life outside of work. For example, when I was getting ready for prom a few months ago, she asked to see all my pictures and really acted like a mom would.

I realize it’s all acting and just a show, but it was really heartwarming to see Ava and Morgan embrace after resolving their conflict. That’s exactly how it should feel.

It’s nice to see the show’s team is so supportive, but now we’re all getting anxious about what will happen in the midseason finale. I’m guessing Ava and Morgan will make it through, because it would be really sad if they didn’t, though I could be wrong!

Don’t miss the midseason finale of High Potential on ABC, airing Tuesday, October 28th, at 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
