Originally intended as a big-screen blockbuster pairing Henry Cavill with director Guy Ritchie, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare didn’t perform well in theaters. While it had moderate success on streaming initially, it’s found a dedicated audience two years after its release. The 2024 film features Cavill alongside action star Alan Ritchson (known from Reacher), as well as Alex Pettyfer, Eiza González, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Till Schweiger, Henry Golding, Babs Olusanmokun, and Cary Elwes. Based on a true story, the film unfortunately didn’t become the box office hit it was expected to be, but it’s now gaining popularity as a cult favorite on streaming platforms.
The film The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare tells the story of a small, unconventional group of Allied soldiers sent on a dangerous mission to disrupt Nazi submarine activity. Their success could bring the United States into World War II and potentially turn the tide of the war. However, the operation feels more like a suicide mission than a calculated strategy. The screenplay, written by Eric Johnson, Arash Amel, and Paul Tamasy, is inspired by Damien Lewis’s 2014 book, Churchill’s Secret Warriors, which details the real-life exploits of this team. Overseen by Churchill himself, this covert operation, similar in nature to the S.A.S., significantly impacted the course of World War II.
Even with a big-name cast and director Guy Ritchie, the movie The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare didn’t attract many viewers in theaters. It cost about $60 million to make, but only earned around $29 million at the box office, making it a significant failure. Since then, it’s been available on several streaming services, but has found a consistent audience on Starz. In fact, viewers on Starz really seem to enjoy it, as it’s been in the platform’s weekly Top 10 for over 170 days!
‘TMOUGW’ Blends Guy Ritchie’s Signature Dialogue With Henry Cavill’s Big-Budget Action
Guy Ritchie films are known for their fast-paced, clever dialogue and stories that weave together seemingly unrelated threads. Henry Cavill’s movies usually deliver big action set pieces and impressive fight scenes. True to form, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare delivers plenty of both – it’s packed with witty banter and thrilling action.
The team’s conversations are quick and witty, leading to some really funny scenes – particularly when Alan Ritchson attempts a terrible Danish accent. The movie starts strong with big explosions and just keeps getting better from there.
Henry Cavill & Guy Ritchie Are Working on Another Movie Together

Although filming finished some time ago, the movie spent nearly three years in post-production. It’s now scheduled to be released in April 2026 and will also feature Jake Gyllenhaal and Rosamund Pike.
