Fans of Yellowstone are in for a treat! Luke Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton, will be taking center stage in a new CBS spinoff called Y: Marshals, expected to premiere in 2026. The show features both new and returning actors, and the latest trailer includes a surprising (and awesome!) appearance by a bear. However, after watching the trailer, it seems highly likely that the show is building towards a heartbreaking outcome for Monica Dutton.
Watch the trailer below. As you enjoy Kayce’s impressive moments, try to notice the key details we’ll be talking about right after.
Let’s address the biggest question fans have been asking throughout the production of Y: Marshals – what’s going on with Monica and Kayce’s relationship?

Y: Marshals’ Trailer May Have Just Convinced Me Monica Is Dead Now
The idea that a major character might die isn’t new among fans of the Yellowstone universe. Luke Grimes, who plays Kayce, actually hinted at this himself when he suggested Kayce might have more free time because of a significant event. Some people thought this meant Kayce and Monica would divorce, while others believed their son, Tate, might be the one who dies. It makes sense why the thought of Monica raising Tate alone would seem like the opposite of the freedom she seeks.
I’ve been rewatching the trailer, and it’s clear they’re hinting at what happens to Monica. Besides the fact that we don’t see Kelsey Asbille at all – her time on Yellowstone was unfortunately overshadowed by some talk about her family history – there are a couple of moments that really stand out. Early on, we hear bits and pieces of Kayce talking, almost like he’s laying out what drives him as a character, and it feels significant given everything that’s happening.
I’ve experienced so much loss – my friends, family, even my brothers are gone. I understand that difficult situations sometimes require difficult choices. Now, I’m focused on starting over and building a better future.
Kayce Dutton
We don’t know if some audio was missing that would have revealed he also lost his wife, or if Kayce simply saw Monica as a partner. Regardless, the way things are presented suggests he’s only recently experienced loss, and doesn’t mention that he successfully sold the ranch and secured a new home.
Everything we’ve discussed so far could suggest Monica and Kayce have separated and divorced. However, there’s a clear shot of Kayce still wearing his wedding ring, which complicates that idea.

It’s not uncommon for people to keep wearing their wedding rings even after a breakup – sometimes to remember the relationship, and other times to discourage unwanted advances. While we don’t have a complete answer yet, we’re getting closer to understanding why this happens.

Y: Marshals Features A Big Ol’ Angry Bear
It sounds like Kayce Dutton and his team might encounter a bear, and fans are wondering if that will lead to a dramatic showdown. While a truly brutal attack is unlikely for a show on CBS, viewers are hoping for some exciting action involving the animal.
I know the bear on Y: Marshals isn’t real – it’s computer-generated. But it looks fantastic! It’s a far cry from the cheap-looking digital effects you sometimes see when a TV show is running low on funds. Let’s just hope no one gave it any stimulants, even a little caffeine.

Rainwater And Tate Dutton Also Pop Up
During the trailer, Gil Birmingham’s character and Brecken Merrill’s character share a striking resemblance in how they regard Kayce, almost like family. Notably, neither of them show any signs of happiness. Mo Brings Plenty was the only original cast member confirmed for the spin-off who wasn’t featured in the trailer.
Thomas Rainwater’s advice to Kayce centers on choosing peace. He points out that while the Duttons are naturally fierce, Kayce should focus on protecting people instead of resorting to violence. Given the possibility that Monica has died, this advice could feel particularly insensitive. However, Rainwater might simply be encouraging Kayce to safeguard Tate and the ranch.
Tate remains silent throughout this, which is probably a good thing considering how poorly his character usually speaks. His expression doesn’t suggest he’s about to receive a loving embrace from his mother, and while there could be other explanations for his unhappiness, only one makes sense in the context of everything else.
No matter what the explanation is, I hope CBS and the show’s creators reveal it before the series starts airing. There’s really no good reason to keep viewers guessing for months. If Kelsey Asbille’s character survives the first episode, it would be a huge surprise and one of the biggest twists on television this year.
Don’t miss Y: Marshals when it premieres on CBS on Sunday, March 1, 2026. And, Paramount+, we’re eagerly awaiting a trailer for the new series starring Rip and Beth!
