Heat 2’s Exact Filming Start Date Confirmed By Director Michael Mann

Director Michael Mann has announced when filming will begin for Heat 2, the sequel to his classic 1995 crime film. Though few details have been released, the movie is expected to feature a star-studded cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, Austin Butler, Adam Driver, Ana de Armas, and Al Pacino, who appeared in the original.

I’m so excited for Heat 2, but getting it made hasn’t been easy! It was originally supposed to come out in 2025, but things got complicated with Warner Bros. over the budget, and they ended up pulling out. Thankfully, it’s now happening at United Artists with a $150 million budget, and Jerry Bruckheimer has said they’re hoping to start filming in August 2026. It’s been a long road, but it looks like it’s finally moving forward!

According to The Guardian, director Michael Mann has provided more details about the film’s production schedule, which is aiming for a 2027 release. While emphasizing that a project isn’t confirmed until it’s actively in production, he stated they are currently planning to begin filming on August 3rd.

He hasn’t shared many details about how the movie is being made, other than that it’s based on his 2022 novel, co-written with Meg Gardiner. But if everything stays on track with Heat 2, this planned production schedule might give us a good idea of when we can expect to see the film in theaters.

The original Heat movie was made remarkably quickly. Production began on February 21, 1995, and finished just 107 days later on June 8th, allowing for a release date of December 15th.

Just because filming starts doesn’t mean the next movie will be released in 10 months. Since the story jumps between the past and present, they might need extra time using computer effects to make the actors look younger or older, which would lengthen the editing and finishing stages.

Looking at the filmmaker’s recent live-action films might give us a better idea of how quickly this movie will be completed. Here’s a look at how long it took to make his three most recent films:

Title Production Start Production Wrap Release Date
Public Enemies March 17, 2008 unknown July 1, 2009
Blackhat May 17, 2013 unknown January 16, 2015
Ferrari August 17, 2022 October 28, 2022 December 25, 2023

Michael Mann’s recent films typically take about 17 months to complete. If “Heat 2” follows a similar schedule and begins filming on August 3rd, it could be released in theaters around January 2028 – slightly later than the originally hoped-for release in 2027.
