HBO’s True Blood was hugely popular in the 2000s and early 2010s, but a show like that probably wouldn’t get made today. Based on Charlaine Harris’ Southern Vampire Mysteries novels, the series followed Sookie Stackhouse, a waitress with the ability to read minds. Anna Paquin starred as Sookie, and her complicated on-screen relationships helped make True Blood a pioneer in the genre of vampire romance.
Like many HBO shows from the 2000s, True Blood was known for being steamy, atmospheric, and playfully over-the-top. Fans of supernatural dramas absolutely loved it, so it wasn’t a shock when HBO announced a reboot in 2020. However, according to HBO CEO Casey Bloys (as reported by TV Line), that reboot is no longer happening. The original True Blood just doesn’t quite fit with the kind of content HBO is producing now.
True Blood Is Not A Show HBO Would Make Today
In 2008, True Blood was a classic HBO show: provocative, often violent, and that pretty much covered what the network was known for. While its thoughtful take on social issues was a nice addition, it wasn’t anything HBO hadn’t done before. Today, though, HBO is recognized for much more than that.
While shows on HBO are often described as thrilling and action-packed, the company has become famous for producing TV series that feel like movies. Game of Thrones was a prime example of this. HBO shows are typically large-scale, costly productions, and frequently tell grand, sweeping stories. This approach is what sets HBO apart from other streaming services like Netflix.
Despite being a fan favorite, True Blood doesn’t quite fit with the kind of shows HBO produces now. It’s more over-the-top and a bit cheesy. While the show wasn’t cheap to make, HBO now avoids the practice of releasing new seasons every year. It’s likely that if True Blood were pitched to HBO today, it wouldn’t be greenlit.
Long-Running Fantasy TV Shows Are Hard To Find Now
When True Blood originally aired, HBO primarily focused on traditional television programming. Now, with the rise of streaming, those types of shows are becoming rare, but this change allows for more time to create high-quality content. Shows like House of the Dragon can stay profitable because viewers continue to watch and rewatch older episodes while waiting for new seasons, which can take two to three years. However, this approach has made shows like True Blood largely unavailable, especially on platforms known for quality like HBO. It’s now uncommon for a streamed series to run for as many seasons as True Blood did—seven in total—because HBO typically limits the number of seasons for its expensive shows. This wouldn’t have worked well for True Blood, as it would have taken away from the viewing experience.
Would A True Blood Reboot Work?
Between 2008 and 2014, True Blood was one of HBO’s most popular shows, rivaling the success of The Sopranos and becoming a signature series for the network. With so many shows being rebooted or remade today, it makes sense that True Blood is being considered for a revival, and there’s good reason to believe it could be a hit.
Vampire stories remain popular even after the end of True Blood in 2014, as shown by the successful reboot of Interview with the Vampire. This new version of the 1994 film is more polished and inclusive, finally acknowledging the LGBTQ+ themes present in the original novels. Its 99% score on Rotten Tomatoes proves its quality. However, it makes you wonder if a revival of True Blood would be equally well-received.
It’s likely HBO would remake True Blood today, but it would be a very different show. They’d probably reduce the over-the-top elements and increase the production value. While some viewers might enjoy this new approach, original fans would likely be disappointed. According to HBO’s Bloys, the reboot was cancelled because the team couldn’t create a version that truly worked. Though anything is possible, given HBO’s current direction, a successful True Blood reboot seems unlikely.
