HBO’s The Pitt Becomes a Global Streaming Hit Ahead of Season 2

Viewers are rediscovering the popular medical drama series on HBO Max. The show has unexpectedly climbed back into the Top 10 most-watched programs on the streaming service just before the new season begins on January 8th.

The medical drama The Pitt is gaining popularity, currently ranking as the third most-watched show worldwide on HBO Max. It’s also back in the top 10 in the United States, debuting today at number four. It trails behind other popular HBO Max series like Heated Rivalry at number one, It: Welcome to Derry at number three, and the reality show Baylen Out Loud at number two.

The Pitt Declared 1 of the Best Shows of 2025

Created by R. Scott Gemmill, The Pitt is a medical drama that follows the doctors and staff of Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center as they navigate a challenging 15-hour shift. The series stars Noah Wyle as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch. This role marks Wyle’s return to medical television, following his well-known performance as Dr. John Carter on the popular show ER.

The first season of The Pitt, released in January 2025, was a critical success. It went on to win five awards at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, including the top prizes for Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, awarded to its star, Wyle. The show triumphed over other popular and highly-regarded series such as Andor, Pluribus, Severance, and Task.

The show also appeared on many critics’ year-end favorites lists, and the American Film Institute named it one of the top ten TV programs of 2025.

I was so hooked on The Pitt last month when TNT played all fifteen episodes without any cuts over five weeks! It’s awesome to hear the show’s popularity is leading HBO Max to create more shows like it – ones with a lot of episodes, reasonable budgets, and a yearly release schedule. They’ve already announced two potential series that will follow this format: American Blue and How to Survive Without Me. I can’t wait!

After a successful first season and winning several awards, everyone is eagerly awaiting the return of The Pitt. The show’s second season, consisting of 15 episodes, picks up ten months after the events of the Season 1 finale, which aired around Labor Day. Creator Gemmill explained the time jump was needed to allow for character development. Patrick Ball will reprise his role as Langdon, who is returning after completing a rehab program, and Katherina LaNasa will be back as Dana, having taken time to recover after being assaulted by a patient in the previous season.

Over the past ten months, my character has had to mature quickly. He’s returning to a work environment filled with difficult memories and unresolved issues. And he’ll have to face Robby, his mentor, after saying some harsh things to him at the end of last season – things he said out of desperation, I believe. That’s what’s in store for him this season.

The Pitt returns with its Season 2 premiere on HBO Max on Jan. 8.
