HBO is famous for attracting incredibly talented actors to its shows. They’ve showcased established stars like Meryl Streep in critically acclaimed dramas such as Big Little Lies, and also helped launch the careers of future stars. For example, Michael B. Jordan first gained recognition as part of the large and impressive cast of The Wire.
I’ve always been struck by the incredible casting on these shows. The Sopranos didn’t just build around James Gandolfini, they surrounded him with a mix of seasoned Italian-American actors, exciting new talent, and even established movie stars. Then Game of Thrones really brought Westeros to life by populating it with complex, believable characters, and they had some of the best actors around to play them. And Curb Your Enthusiasm? They already had a fantastic group of improvisers, but adding J.B. Smoove in season six just took everything to another level.
Recently, HBO has assembled some incredible talent for its shows. They’ve teamed up Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell as Dunk and Egg, featured a memorable monologue by Sam Rockwell in The White Lotus about experiences in Thailand, and even had Bradley Cooper appear in a Righteous Gemstones episode set during the Civil War. While The Penguin gained its lead actor from another project, it boasts one of the strongest casts in HBO history.
The Penguin Was A Pleasant Surprise
Hollywood is now dominated by streaming shows and movies based on existing, well-known franchises. Even channels like HBO are participating, creating multiple spin-offs of shows like Game of Thrones, extending limited series into full seasons, and planning to adapt the Harry Potter movies into a decade-long TV project.
Interestingly, many recent TV shows based on existing franchises – the ones people didn’t even think they needed – have become some of the best shows of the last few years. For example, nobody initially requested a Star Wars series focused on Cassian Andor, but creator Tony Gilroy delivered a powerful and definitive exploration of the sacrifices required for revolution.
The announcement that Oz Cobb, Colin Farrell’s character from The Batman, would get his own series was met with skepticism – many felt it was an unnecessary addition to the growing number of spin-offs. Its success hinged on who HBO chose to lead the project; it could have been a surprising hit like Peacemaker or a failure like The Book of Boba Fett. Thankfully, they selected Lauren LeFranc as showrunner, and she seems to be the right person for the job.
Similar to director David Gilroy, writer Christina LeFranc prioritizes compelling storytelling with relevant themes over building out extensive fictional worlds or focusing on merchandise. When she agreed to write The Penguin series, she was drawn to the potential for a character-driven story in the style of Scarface, focusing on the complexities of a criminal, rather than simply adding minor villains to Matt Reeves’ Gotham universe.
The Penguin explores the lives of three complex criminals in Gotham City: Oz, a cynical gangster; Sofia, a woman recently released from a mental institution; and Victor, a lost orphan. The story reveals how each character’s difficult past shaped them, questions whether they can be saved, and shows what it would take for them to change. Through their heartbreaking histories and bleak futures, we see a complete picture of three damaged people and how they affect one another.
The Penguin Is Carried By A Stacked Ensemble Cast
Colin Farrell was a standout performer in The Batman, even though he only appeared in a few scenes, mostly providing some much-needed dark humor. Now, in The Penguin, he fully develops that character into someone as layered and compelling as Tony Soprano.
The show boasts a fantastic cast, including Colin Farrell. Cristin Milioti delivers a moving and captivating performance as Sofia, while Rhenzy Feliz grounds the series as Vic, providing a strong moral compass. Mark Strong steps into the role of Carmine Falcone, taking over from John Turturro, and Clancy Brown adds another DC character to his repertoire – following his extensive voice work in DC animation – playing Sal Maroni, a rival gang leader.
