HBO’s Lanterns Looks Killer, But It Has Me Worried About the DCU’s Future for One Reason

With James Gunn not directing or writing it, Lanterns faces high expectations as one of the first projects in the new DC Universe. Initial reactions to the show’s first trailer, and especially the portrayal of Guy Gardner, haven’t been very positive. The shift in tone from the bright and cheerful Superman to the seemingly darker Lanterns is noticeable, but the HBO series has bigger challenges to overcome to win over audiences.

When building a shared cinematic universe, especially one based on decades of comic books, staying true to established stories and characters is crucial. That’s why, if the trailer accurately reflects the direction they’re taking, the new Green Lantern Corps in the DC Universe – specifically Hal Jordan and John Stewart – might feel very different from how fans know them in the comics.

A ‘True Detective’ Green Lantern Story Has Legs

It would be shocking if the new series Lanterns ended up as bleak and depressing as the first season of HBO’s True Detective, but it’s not really unexpected. True Detective has clearly been a major influence on Lanterns’ development. Interestingly, for a long time, the only thing we knew about the show was a single picture of Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan.

Even before knowing much about the story, the basic idea totally grabbed me: these powerful cosmic heroes, usually dealing with universe-level threats, are suddenly focused on a small town in the American Midwest. The crimes they’re looking into are clearly wild enough to involve the Green Lanterns, which is exciting! But honestly, I’m a little worried about how this smaller story will fit into the bigger DC Universe we’re building. It feels like a bit of a jump, and I hope it doesn’t feel disconnected.

The trailer features the characters wearing the same outfits as in the promotional images, suggesting the footage likely covers only the beginning of Lanterns, possibly even just the first episode. Because of this, it’s too soon to form a solid opinion about the show’s style or mood, and the trailer might be intentionally misleading.

Lanterns’ First Trailer Says All We Need to Know

The new thriller, Lanterns, seems so focused on being serious that it disrespects the established Green Lantern universe. Traditionally, Green Lanterns train and mentor each other, so it feels jarring to hear Hal Jordan casually call them “aliens.” This is especially true when he insults Ch’p, a fellow Lantern he’s known in the comics, with a crude nickname.

Even without the long history of superpowered individuals in the DC Universe, this scene reveals that the show’s version of Hal Jordan doesn’t seem to know or care much for his fellow Lanterns, including established characters like Kilowog. The series also seems to be changing John Stewart’s origin story in a strange way, having him earn the Green Lantern ring before he’s even supposed to have it. This suggests the show will likely take many creative freedoms with established Green Lantern lore and the relationships between its characters.

Look, as a comic book fan, I’m used to seeing adaptations that barely touch the source material. And honestly, the DC Universe doesn’t have to copy everything from the comics – sometimes that’s good, sometimes not so much. But one change they’ve made has really gotten people talking: they’ve decided that Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van didn’t send Kal-El to Earth to be our savior, but to rule over us. It’s a pretty big departure from what most of us know and love!

DCU Lore is Pitiful Right Now

If the recent trailer was deliberately designed to mislead viewers and hide key plot points, DCU and HBO must have anticipated a mixed reaction. While the trailer might be missing finished special effects or visuals that will appear in the actual episodes, it would be a risky move to intentionally present controversial character moments and dialogue in a misleading way just to create a shocking reveal when the show premieres in August.

Despite the potential of the DC Universe, its overall history and background haven’t been fully explored yet. Each new series – like Creature Commandos, Peacemaker, and Superman – has focused more on smaller, personal stories rather than the larger world around them.

We didn’t learn much about the Green Lantern Corps from Guy Gardner in Superman, as he was already known as a member of the Justice League. It’s hard to say what new stories Lanterns will tell when it comes out this summer, but hopefully it will clarify what is officially part of the DC Universe’s Green Lantern history.
