Even though The Rings of Power has received mixed reactions, the upcoming Harry Potter series on HBO Max shows that exploring the backstory of a beloved world can be a good strategy. The Rings of Power, which delves into the history of Middle-earth before The Lord of the Rings, has become one of Prime Video’s most popular fantasy shows.
Despite being a separate story, some dedicated fans of The Lord of the Rings are unhappy with how The Rings of Power changes details from the original timeline. However, this is what sets The Rings of Power apart from the Harry Potter series on HBO, which is taking much bigger chances with its source material and appealing to both longtime fans and newcomers.
HBO’s Harry Potter Remake Proves The Rings Of Power Could’ve Been Much Worse
The Upcoming Adaptation Is Already Stoking Controversy
With production beginning as early as 2021, the new Harry Potter series on HBO Max was eagerly awaited. However, five years after the initial announcement, the show is facing significant controversy, and not a single episode has aired. While everything from the actors to set designs has been closely examined, one particular problem keeps coming up as the biggest source of complaints.
Instead of creating a new story within the Harry Potter universe or expanding on its existing world, the HBO Max series will largely be a remake of the Harry Potter films released between 2001 and 2011. While revisiting a well-known story might seem appealing, it also presents challenges and could potentially hinder the show’s success right from the start.
Interestingly, The Rings of Power actually helped preserve the reputation of The Lord of the Rings. Despite making changes that affected the overall story, the series never tried to overshadow Peter Jackson’s original films. By adding new stories to the franchise, it actually protects those classic movies, ensuring sequels, prequels, and spin-offs don’t diminish their impact.
The Rings Of Power Had The Right Concept, But The Wrong Execution
The Prequel Took The Best Approach
It’s natural to compare any new installment in a franchise to what came before. However, while The Rings of Power will inevitably be compared to The Lord of the Rings, they are fundamentally different stories. Though there are occasional connections, The Rings of Power is a prequel that largely stands on its own, separate from the original films.
What really sets The Rings of Power apart is its ability to stand on its own as a strong franchise. While the show isn’t without flaws – the rushed pacing, a needless romantic subplot, and changes to established lore aren’t ideal – the recent Harry Potter reboot on HBO demonstrates just how much worse it could have been, even for casual viewers.
