HBO’s Harry Potter Series Robs Fans of Other Wizarding Schools

The new TV series is causing a lot of debate among fans of the original movies and those eager to see more of the Wizarding World. While these concerns are understandable, many hope the series will expand on the story in ways the movies didn’t have time to. However, there’s one important aspect fans haven’t been discussing much.

With Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the series began to expand the magical world by introducing different wizarding schools, such as Ilvermorny and Uagadou. However, fans are consistently drawn back to Hogwarts, and this focus suggests a missed opportunity to explore the truly unique potential of these other schools and further enrich the broader Harry Potter universe.

The Wizarding World is More Than Hogwarts

The introduction of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone immediately drew readers into a magical world of learning and ignited their imaginations. Beyond the school itself, it hinted at the many other wonders hidden within the wider wizarding universe.

Throughout the Harry Potter films, the wizarding world expanded to include places like Hogsmeade and the Ministry of Magic. Goblet of Fire revealed that Hogwarts wasn’t the only wizarding school, hinting at a much larger world—a world that fans unfortunately never got to see fully explored. While the Fantastic Beasts movies tried to broaden the scope again, they weren’t successful in capturing the same audience enthusiasm.

Hogwarts wasn’t originally intended to be the sole focus of the magical world, but rather an important part of a much bigger one – like what usually happens with successful stories. However, with the new show revisiting Harry Potter, it feels harder than ever to expand and explore new ideas. And to make matters worse, the Goblet of Fire book and movie only hinted at how much more there could be.

Other Wizarding Schools Deserve More Attention in Harry Potter

Most Harry Potter fans know about Hogwarts, and many are also familiar with Beauxbatons and Durmstrang. But as the story expands through spin-offs and games, two other schools have become quite well-known: Ilvermorny, located in the United States, and Uagadou, which is in Africa.

Ilvermorny and Durmstrang offer rich potential for new stories that could significantly deepen the Wizarding World’s history. A series set at Ilvermorny, for instance, could highlight fascinating similarities and differences compared to Hogwarts, as the magical culture is unique. Durmstrang’s practice of spellcasting without wands introduces a completely fresh perspective on the universe and its established lore. While the Fantastic Beasts films didn’t fully realize their planned story, they demonstrated the value of expanding beyond the original narrative.

The existing stories are full of amazing ideas, and it would be a real shame not to explore them in a new series or movie, similar to how Harry Potter was expanded upon. While it’s great to see familiar characters in a TV show, focusing on them might mean we’ll never get to see other interesting parts of this world, like different magical schools. It’s frustrating to think about all the potential stories that could be told beyond the original Harry Potter books, and fans might feel like they’re missing out.
