Production on HBO’s new series began this summer, and the crew is making good progress. Despite some initial concerns about revisiting the story, early glimpses from the set suggest the new series will closely resemble the original, much-loved films.
The character of the wizard was created with Nicolas Flamel, a historical French alchemist who lived from 1330 to 1418, as inspiration. In the story, the wizard lived from 1326 to 1992, choosing to relinquish the Philosopher’s Stone. Though Flamel was formally introduced in the Harry Potter prequel, Fantastic Beasts – portrayed by Brontis Jodorowsky in the 2018 film Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald – he didn’t appear in any of the original eight Harry Potter movies or the books.
Fans loved the first look at John Lithgow as Dumbledore, and excitement continued as more set photos emerged. Many were particularly enthusiastic about Dumbledore’s long white beard and elaborate costumes. One fan noted, “He seems to have several outfits – a blue one and a green one from the beach scenes.”
One fan commented that Nicolas Flamel’s outfit was something they’d wear if they were over 600 years old, while another expressed excitement about the character’s potential.
People were confused by leaked photos of Dumbledore on a beach, but it seems the show will explore his history with Nicolas and Perenelle Flamel. The beach scene likely shows either Dumbledore first obtaining the Philosopher’s Stone from them, before it was moved to Gringotts bank, or his later visit asking them to destroy it.
