Early reviews are in for HBO Max’s new historical series, but the show hasn’t received a great response on Rotten Tomatoes. Popular period dramas are becoming increasingly common, largely due to the success of Netflix’s Bridgerton. Many streaming services are now trying to create similar hits, and HBO Max’s The Seduction is their latest attempt.
Early reviews for The Seduction are mixed, with a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on six reviews. This score is likely to change as more reviews come in, and an audience rating isn’t available yet.
Early reviews of The Seduction are mixed. While the show’s visuals and production values are receiving praise, critics are divided on how well it portrays the historical scandals and romances. Comparisons to Dangerous Liaisons suggest the series doesn’t quite capture the depth and meaning of the original story.
Nick Bythrow from ScreenRant expressed a similar opinion about The Seduction, describing it as sensual but ultimately lacking depth. He gave the series a rating of 5 out of 10, stating:
Despite strong acting and beautiful visuals, the film’s repetitive story prevents it from fully realizing its potential and exploring its ideas effectively.
Featuring Anamarie Vartolomei, Diane Kruger, Lucas Bravo, and Vincent Lacoste, The Seduction tells the story of how a young Isabelle de Merteuil (Vartolomei) gained influence and became a prominent figure in high society. Vartolomei often appears in period films, with previous roles in The Count of Monte Cristo and Happening. Kruger is well-known for her work in Inglourious Basterds and the National Treasure movies, and Bravo is recognized from Emily in Paris.
