Plus, it’s the place to find everything related to DC Comics, including stories featuring Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and all your favorite DC heroes.
The streaming service has a great selection of action movies, like Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and The Terminator. They’ve also recently added the Mummy films starring Brendan Fraser, which are fun to watch before the release of The Mummy 4 in 2028.
Keanu Reeves stars in a thrilling five-part series available on HBO Max, playing a highly skilled assassin. Originally launched in 2014, the series has grown over time with new installments that build on its story and introduce fresh faces. It’s considered one of the top action franchises available anywhere, and more content is currently in development.
The John Wick Films Have Incredible Action Sequences
The original John Wick movie told a classic revenge story: John comes out of retirement as a hitman after someone harms his dog. But what really made the film special was its exciting and expertly filmed action. John Wick is an exceptionally skilled and dangerous assassin, capable of defeating opponents using virtually any object as a weapon.
The first movie is packed with intense gunfights, and the following films build on that action with increasingly imaginative and fun scenes. The second film boasts a thrilling shootout in underground catacombs, the third includes a prolonged chase involving dogs, and in the fourth, John uses special shotgun shells – Dragon’s Breath rounds – to take down his enemies.
Ballerina brings exciting new action to the John Wick universe. Some standout moments include a fight scene in a room packed with explosives and a thrilling battle featuring flamethrowers. The John Wick films consistently raise the stakes, always finding inventive ways for John and other assassins to defeat their enemies.
The World Of John Wick Continues To Expand
As a big fan of the John Wick films, I’ve always appreciated how they start with a pretty straightforward premise – a skilled assassin getting revenge. But what really makes the series special is how much it’s grown beyond that simple idea. The first movie introduced this fascinating world with The Continental, a hotel for assassins, and we’ve seen even more of that universe explored in the recent miniseries from 2023. It’s become so much more than just a revenge story!
The world of The Continental, as seen in later stories, features hotels in many cities and a huge network of assassins. This community is governed by a powerful group called The High Table, who enforce their rules with swift and severe consequences for anyone who breaks them.
Besides the larger organizations, the world includes smaller groups like the Ruska Roma, the criminal network that trained John Wick. The film Ballerina delves deeper into this group, first seen in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, by featuring Ana de Armas as Eve, a ballet dancer and highly trained assassin.
Beyond the incredible action, the John Wick movies have a rich backstory that makes them so compelling. The series isn’t over yet – a fifth John Wick film is planned, along with a spin-off series focusing on Donnie Yen’s character, Caine, from John Wick: Chapter 4. You can currently watch the first five films on HBO Max, where they rank among the best action movies available.
