HBO Max Reveals the ‘Green’ in Lanterns Trailer After Fan Backlash

HBO Max has addressed feedback from viewers about the initial footage released for its new DC series, Lanterns. The streaming service responded to concerns raised about a specific detail in the trailer that many fans noticed.

HBO Max pokes fun at DC fans claiming there’s no ‘green’ in Lanterns trailer

A fan on X (formerly Twitter) noticed the absence of green in promotional materials for the upcoming DC series Lanterns, pointing out, “He’s a Green Lantern!” HBO Max responded directly, playfully asking, “What do you mean there’s no green?”

I have to admit, I was a little confused when I saw this post! The platform responded to something with a picture of a simple green plastic basket on a table. But then it clicked – it was a clear nod to the Green Lantern! It really caught people’s attention, racking up over 761,000 views and tons of comments. It all happened right after the first teasers for the series started popping up online, so the timing was perfect – a fun little Easter egg for fans.

HBO is developing a new superhero series called Lanterns, created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King. Based on the DC Comics Green Lantern, the show features the characters Hal Jordan and John Stewart as they investigate a murder in Nebraska that unravels into a larger, more complex mystery. DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television are producing the series, with Chris Mundy leading the creative team as showrunner.

Kyle Chandler stars as Hal Jordan, an experienced Green Lantern nearing the end of his career. Aaron Pierre plays John Stewart, a newcomer who Jordan mentors. The series also features Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, with Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, and Ulrich Thomsen appearing in recurring roles.

Filming started in Los Angeles in February 2025 and wrapped up in July. The series will have eight episodes and is scheduled to debut on HBO and stream on HBO Max in August 2026. It’s part of the first phase of the new DC Universe, known as Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
