HBO Fantasy Show Westworld Had Even Worse Ending Than Game Of Thrones

Look, everyone talks about the ending of Game of Thrones being divisive, and rightfully so. But as a long-time viewer of HBO, I’ve seen worse. HBO consistently delivers incredible television – some of the best ever, honestly – but they have a real knack for stumbling at the finish line. There’s another show, one I truly loved, that suffered an even more disappointing fate than Westeros.

HBO is well-known for its fantasy shows, and Game of Thrones is arguably the most famous. Adapted from George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels, the show aired for eight seasons between 2011 and 2019. While Game of Thrones was incredibly popular and critically acclaimed, many viewers were disappointed with how the series concluded.

As a huge TV fan, I thought the Game of Thrones finale was pretty awful, but honestly, the ending of Westworld frustrated me even more. It’s definitely up there as one of the most disappointing conclusions to a show I’ve ever seen.

Westworld Never Got An Ending

Westworld is a science fiction drama set in a futuristic Wild West. Created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, the show is based on the 1973 film by Michael Crichton. It centers around Westworld, a highly advanced amusement park populated by incredibly realistic androids, or ‘hosts.’ Wealthy visitors can live out their fantasies within the park, interacting with these hosts as they please.

The guests at the park get to live out their deepest desires – everything from romantic fantasies to violent ones – in a completely safe environment. The park’s programming ensures no humans are harmed, and everyone’s memory of each experience is erased afterward. But after a system upgrade, some of the park’s artificial hosts start remembering things and become self-aware. This leads them to want freedom, and ultimately, to try and take over the world.

HBO’s Westworld started strong, becoming a huge hit and breaking viewership records in its first season. However, the show’s popularity decreased in the second season, and after four seasons, HBO cancelled it in 2022. Unfortunately, this meant the show didn’t receive a satisfying conclusion, as the fourth season ended with an unresolved cliffhanger.

Even though the creators, Nolan and Joy, had a story planned for a fifth season of Westworld, it probably won’t be made. This means the show will likely end without a satisfying conclusion.

Westworld Was Supposed To Be HBO’s Next Game Of Thrones

When Game of Thrones was nearing its finale, HBO needed a new, big-budget show to fill the gap. Westworld debuted between seasons 6 and 7 of Game of Thrones, and was initially intended to be its successor, even though the two shows had very different settings and storylines.

With its impressive visuals, ambitious scope, and thought-provoking themes, Westworld seemed poised for long-term success. The show also boasted a talented cast, including Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Thandiwe Newton, Jeffrey Wright, and Evan Rachel Wood. After a strong first season, many believed Westworld could fill the void left by Game of Thrones when that series ended.

Despite a strong start, Westworld wasn’t able to keep up the success of its first season. Quality declined in season two and never improved. Later seasons became overly complicated, characters weren’t fully developed, and viewers lost interest, ultimately leading to the show’s cancellation. It didn’t become the next big hit like Game of Thrones as many had hoped.

Few Prestige TV Shows Have Managed To End On A High Note

High-quality TV shows, often made with large budgets and featuring compelling stories and talented actors, naturally create high expectations. However, many struggle to live up to their initial promise, as seen with shows like Westworld.

Shows like Westworld and Game of Thrones, along with Dexter, Lost, and True Blood, are known for disappointing endings. However, series like Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, and Six Feet Under successfully concluded their runs. Creating high-quality TV shows is challenging, and even those with flawed finales are often remembered for their strengths.
