As a big horror fan, I know a lot of us are wondering what’s happening with It: Welcome to Derry Season 2. The show, based on Stephen King’s novel, really grabbed me with its 1962 setting and the creepy things that start happening when a family moves to Derry. Now that the first season is finished, everyone’s dying to know if HBO will give it another go and continue the story.
Has HBO canceled It: Welcome to Derry or renewed it for Season 2?
HBO hasn’t made a final decision about a second season of ‘It: Welcome to Derry.’ While it hasn’t been officially renewed or canceled, comments from co-creator Andy Muschietti suggest it’s still a possibility.
Director Andy Muschietti told Variety he envisions the series spanning three seasons, delving deeper into the town of Maine and the history behind Pennywise’s curse. He explained that the overall storyline will focus on three key periods in Pennywise’s activity: 1962, 1935, and 1908.
The show will delve into the backstory and hidden details suggested in the original book. The creator discovered a compelling narrative woven into the clues Stephen King provided within the book’s interludes, and decided to build the series around it. He explained that the story will unfold in a reverse chronological order.
In a recent SFX interview, the showrunner discussed how Season 1 is designed to lay the groundwork for future seasons. He explained that the season offers a deeper look at the overarching story for fans of the books and films, hinting at larger mysteries to be explored. According to Games Radar, he added that the setups in Season 1 will truly come to fruition in Seasons 2 and 3, revealing answers to fundamental questions about the central entity, ‘It’.
In a recent interview with Cinepop, director Andy Muschietti revealed plans for “Welcome to Derry” to span three seasons. He explained that the show is designed to tell one large, complete story over those three seasons, adding that there’s still a lot of ground to cover.
If the show gets renewed for a second season, it will probably take around 18 to 24 months to produce, like most big TV series. That means we could expect it to be released on HBO sometime in 2027.
