The world of Harry Potter continues to grow, and with a new TV series in the works at HBO, there’s hope for revisiting a previously disappointing movie. While the Harry Potter films are considered some of the greatest fantasy movies ever made, this new series offers a chance to expand the story on television.
A new TV series based on the Harry Potter books is being created. The show is expected to run for ten years to ensure all the books are fully adapted. While it’s currently planned for release on HBO Max in early 2027, the studio is already thinking about making even more Harry Potter content in the future.
During a recent earnings call, Warner Bros. Discovery’s JB Perrette hinted that they’re considering new TV shows based on the world of Harry Potter, potentially including spinoffs. He didn’t specify any specific ideas, but this could be a great opportunity to revitalize the Fantastic Beasts film franchise.
What Went Wrong With The Fantastic Beasts Spinoffs
Five years after the last Harry Potter film, audiences returned to the world of magic with the new movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Directed by David Yates and written by J.K. Rowling, this film is a prequel to the Harry Potter series and is based on Rowling’s 2001 book of the same name.
The movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them centers around Newt Scamander (played by Eddie Redmayne) and his travels through New York City. When his suitcase is lost, magical creatures escape and cause trouble for the non-magical world. The film was both a critical and commercial hit, leading to plans for future installments.
Originally, Warner Bros. intended to make five Fantastic Beasts movies, but that changed because the second and third films didn’t perform well at the box office and the production faced some difficulties. The Crimes of Grindelwald earned $654.9 million worldwide on a $200 million budget, while Secrets of Dumbledore brought in $407.2 million against a similar $200 million budget.
The second film, Crimes of Grindelwald, moved the story’s focus away from Newt and his magical creatures and towards Grindelwald and his complicated relationship with a young Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law). This change made the series more serious, less enjoyable, and confusing, introducing several inconsistencies with the established rules of the wizarding world.
The films received largely negative reviews, particularly Secrets of Dumbledore, which critics found both cluttered and lacking depth. Many also found the movies uncharming, dull, and confusing. Adding to the issues, the Fantastic Beasts series faced significant off-screen problems, including the firing of Johnny Depp, issues involving Ezra Miller, and controversial statements made by J.K. Rowling.
These factors led to the cancellation of the Fantastic Beasts series after its third film, casting a shadow over the wizarding world following the huge success of the Harry Potter movies.
How Harry Potter Spinoff Shows Can Make Up For The Prequel Movies
The Fantastic Beasts films were intended to be an enjoyable and engaging addition to the Harry Potter universe, taking place decades earlier. The idea was to delve into the wizarding world before the rise of Voldemort and enrich the existing stories. However, the movies didn’t quite live up to those expectations.
The Fantastic Beasts movies started to lose their way after the first one. While the story of Grindelwald and Dumbledore is interesting, it might have worked better as its own series. That would have allowed the Fantastic Beasts films to concentrate on Newt Scamander and the magical creatures they’re named after.
As a fan, I really think the wizarding world has so many stories to tell – way more than the Fantastic Beasts films ever managed. Honestly, I’d love to see those stories explored in a TV series. I think Harry Potter spinoff shows could really redeem things after Fantastic Beasts. They could properly give Newt, Grindelwald, and Dumbledore the attention they deserve, and finally tell the stories of so many other characters we’ve barely seen!
Why HBO Making Harry Potter Spinoffs Is Still A Risk
While many fans are thrilled about the possibility of new Harry Potter shows, particularly those exploring different stories within the wizarding world, HBO is taking a considerable gamble. The main Harry Potter series is currently being filmed and is expected to finish around mid-2026, after which a lengthy period of editing and special effects work will be needed to fully realize the magical world on screen.
A Harry Potter TV series is a gamble because the existing movies are so well-loved and highly regarded – it will be difficult to create something as good. Although HBO is capable of making a great Harry Potter show, it’s risky to plan spin-off series before knowing if the main series will be a hit.
The upcoming Harry Potter TV series has a lot of possibilities, and if it does well, it could give HBO the opportunity to revitalize the Fantastic Beasts films and create more spin-off shows to broaden the wizarding world.
