Many expected Jessie Buckley to be nominated for an Oscar in 2026 for her performance in the highly praised film, Hamnet, and she’s considered a strong contender to win Best Actress. The film itself also received numerous nominations. However, the lack of a nomination for Paul Mescal in the Supporting Actor category was a surprise, and now his co-star is speaking out about it.
After this year’s Oscar nominations were revealed, many actors reacted to being recognized. Jessie Buckley, while discussing her own nomination, was also questioned about her co-star, Paul Mescal, being left out. Many consider this a significant oversight, especially since he was nominated for a Golden Globe and is receiving an Actors’ Award. Buckley addressed the situation in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, saying:
I think he’s truly exceptional in this movie. Working with him feels like I’ve found a lifelong collaborator. He’s someone I deeply admire, and I believe his talent will continue to develop and influence things for years to come.
Paul Mescal delivers a truly outstanding performance in Hamnet, and his chemistry with Jessie Buckley beautifully portrays this heartbreaking story. Though he wasn’t nominated for an Oscar this year, his co-star, Jessie Buckley, emphasized that she wouldn’t have been able to play Agnes without Mescal as William. As she explained:
What we built together is incredibly meaningful to me, and I cherish it deeply. Agnes, as a character, wouldn’t exist without Paul, and neither would the story itself – everything in it is a result of his contributions. Any praise the story receives belongs to him just as much as any recognition he receives for his individual work.
The nominees for Best Supporting Actor are Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn for Once Battle After Another, Jacob Elordi for Frankenstein, Stellan Skarsgård for Sentimental Value, and Delroy Lindo for Sinners. Lindo’s nomination was a bit of a surprise – while it’s fantastic to see him recognized, most people didn’t expect him to be included. I personally thought Paul Mescal would have been nominated instead.
It’s a bit of a mixed bag. I’m glad to see the actors who were nominated, but it’s disappointing that some deserving performers were overlooked. This year, Paul Mescal, Adam Sandler (for his work in Jay Kelly), and Ariana Grande (for Wicked: For Good) were notably left out.
Despite Paul Mescal missing out on a nomination, the film Hamnet received significant recognition. It was nominated for Best Picture and Best Director, as well as in several other categories including Original Score, Adapted Screenplay, Casting, Costume Design, and Production Design. There’s still plenty to be happy about for the film.
I’m really hoping Hamnet gets some recognition at the Oscars! You can find out if it wins when the ceremony airs on ABC on March 15th at 7 p.m. Eastern Time. I’ll definitely be tuning in!
