This year, Halloween Horror Nights 34 at Universal Studios Orlando has officially begun, offering visitors the chance to explore ten entirely new terrifying attractions. Among these, you’ll find several popular intellectual properties such as “Fallout,” “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” and “Terrifier,” along with five unique original ideas designed specifically to send a chill down your spine.
Universal Studios graciously extended an invitation to TopMob for the grand opening, allowing us to explore a multitude of haunted houses, and it is clear that this year’s selection ranks among the finest array of such attractions they have offered in recent years.
As a cinephile who savors the thrill of horror films, let me share with you an intriguing list I’ve curated. These aren’t your typical haunted house ratings based on fear factor, but rather a thoughtful appraisal focusing on creativity, design finesse, flawless execution, and the unique ambiance each offers. Enjoy the read!
Previously, we too compiled a ranking for the fright-fest at Universal Studios Hollywood during their Halloween Horror Nights. Notably, “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” claimed the number one position in our list.
10.) Jason Universe
If You Simply Want to See Jason, This Is Where You Should Go.
I was particularly eager to navigate through the Jason Universe maze, given my fondness for the legendary figure from horror films, who’s been somewhat absent from popular culture lately (with “Friday the 13th Part 6: Jason Lives” being one of my favorite horror movies). However, this haunted house seems to have squandered several creative opportunities and falls short in terms of originality.
If you’re specifically seeking a thrill of encountering Jason Voorhees unexpectedly, then this haunted house might just be what you’re after, as it primarily focuses on that element. However, some may find the overall ambiance somewhat unremarkable. Regrettably, there are very few explicit kill scenes shown and not many set pieces to appreciate. There was a lot of potential for this attraction to be more engaging, but unfortunately, it seemed underdeveloped in various aspects.
Indeed, the ideal portrayal of what this encounter could have resembled can be found by navigating through the haunted house depicted in the movie “Terrifier” – but I’ll delve into that detail shortly.
9.) Grave of Flesh
Welcome to the Afterlife—Things Could Be Better
Upon learning about the concept of “Grave of Flesh”, my curiosity was instantly piqued, as I had anticipated it to rank quite high.
The concept behind the maze is this: You, the explorer, have just passed away. Your funeral has taken place, and now it’s time for what follows – a perilous underworld filled with carnivorous creatures that feed on the deceased and relentlessly chase the living forever. Now, such a tale sounds quite captivating. Nevertheless, the delivery could use some improvement-there are, however, some visually striking cave formations to admire.
The overall idea remains somewhat incomplete, with the labyrinth layout frequently appearing uncertain about its intended identity. To make matters worse, the average character designs and absence of thrilling visual spectacles further contribute to this game’s ranking as a strong candidate for position #9.
8.) Fallout
Fans of the Show Will Appreciate Their Vault Experience
I was really looking forward to the HHN maze titled Fallout, but my excitement waned as I exited, feeling only a casual shrug in response. This maze takes participants through significant moments and locations from Amazon Studios’ acclaimed series, making it an appealing experience for fans of the show.
The most captivating aspect of the house lies in its collections; strolling through a replica of a Fallout Vault will always retain an appealing charm. Yet, the environments lack substantial events as you explore them, and even the most dramatic instances fail to deliver true excitement.
Currently, there’s nothing particularly poor about Fallout; however, it’s more on the ordinary side with some squandered potential opportunities. Given its handling of one of the industry’s largest IPs and following such an impressive series, that’s somewhat disappointing.
7.) Galkn: Monsters of the North
Can You Escape the Belly of the Beast?
In the chilly, isolated northern village, an evil entity resurrects, accompanied by armies of monstrous steeds. This chilling tale unfolds as these creatures and demons torment the villagers. The theme is light-hearted, and there are several impressive visual spectacles along the way, culminating in a grand animatronic monster towards the end of the adventure.
The clarity and coherence of the narrative in this maze could use some enhancement, as it often left us confused about the events taking place, even up until the very end. Despite finding the overall experience enjoyable, we frequently found ourselves puzzled about what exactly we were observing throughout our journey.
6.) Hatchet and Chains: Demon Bounty Hunters
The Wild West But With Demons
In the story Hatchet and Chains: Demon Bounty Hunters, those navigating the maze face a constant threat of being possessed by malevolent lava demons lurking at every corner. However, these individuals are frequently rescued due to Hatch and Chains, skilled demon hunters who carry enchanted weapons capable of saving lives.
The spooky mansion maintains an exceptional ambiance that consistently keeps you on edge. It’s filled with imaginative jump scares, one of which I particularly enjoy that revolves around a coffin. The architecture is commendable as well, boasting a mid-house transition that adds to the overall experience.
5.) Dolls: Let’s Play Dead
She Just Wants to Play
One interesting aspect of the game “Dolls: Let’s Play Dead” lies in its manipulation of scale, as players are portrayed as miniature dolls navigating through intricate mazes. The idea of evading a malicious yet playful little girl is both intriguing and entertaining, and it’s skillfully incorporated throughout the gameplay experience.
It is evident that the designers of this labyrinth took delight in pushing boundaries with their intricate, bizarre props, a sight that was both captivating and slightly unsettling. Upon completing the maze, one member of our group exclaimed with a mixture of surprise and disbelief: “Wow, that’s quite disturbing.
4.) The Horrors of The Wyatt Sicks
From the Ring Into a Terrifying Shadowy Realm.
In this locale, The Haunt of Wyatt Sicks has become an unexpected success. Although its WWE-inspired theme may not appeal to all, I must admit that the overall production is exceptionally well-crafted, making it certainly worth checking out.
The ghostly residence initiates by presenting visitors with images of Wyatt Sicks in a WWE ring, leading them swiftly into a more terrifying environment: the Firefly Funhouse. From there, an array of imaginative scenes and carefully timed frights unfold, avoiding the approach of being pure nonsense (similar to The Weeknd’s mazes).
In this spooky house, visitors first encounter Wyatt Sicks in a WWE ring, then quickly move into the Firefly Funhouse. What follows is a series of creatively set up scares that are well-timed and avoid being nonsensical like The Weeknd’s mazes.
It all comes from the mind of modern wrestling legend Windham Rotunda, also known as Bray Wyatt.
3.) El Artista: A Spanish Haunting
A Tortured Artist Brings to Life A Haunting House
Among all the haunted houses at Universal Studios Orlando during Halloween Horror Nights, this one stands out as the most original, and a major factor contributing to its excellence is its compelling narrative.
The Haunting of El Artista: A Tale from 19th-Century Spain
Storyline: This narrative revolves around a tormented artist in old Spain who shifts to a secluded countryside mansion in search of creative motivation. As he crafts his art, it seemingly springs to life – however, the beauty is gradually sullied by ominous darkness. Given the circumstances, events do not turn out favorably.
What truly stands out about this home is its grand size, which is astonishing. The initial sight that visitors encounter is breathtakingly awe-inspiring, and the overall size of the house remains striking throughout their entire visit. Additionally, there are numerous inventive monster designs and amusing surprises scattered around.
2.) Terrifier
Spending Time With Art Has Never Been So Fun
By now, many are likely familiar with the character Art the Clown, even if they haven’t watched any of the Terrifier movies. Known for its excessive, gruesome, and utterly mad content, the franchise certainly lives up to its reputation. This Halloween Horror Nights maze is no exception, delivering all that and more.
In my opinion, there’s no other maze quite like the one I long to explore – a captivating series of iconic and breathtaking scenes that echo the chaos and artistry found throughout Jason’s films, particularly his first two masterpieces. Every corner seems meticulously crafted with an abundance of creativity and passion evident in every detail, making it an unforgettable experience for those who dare to wander through its labyrinthine paths.
I had anticipated that HHN might misuse the scent element, given the initial whispers – luckily, though, they didn’t, which keeps this maze higher on my list compared to what it could have been.
It appears that Halloween Horror Nights’ hidden advantage is none other than Art the Clown, and this becomes evident here. The presence of such a lively, enjoyable, and charismatic character throughout the attraction offers an exceptional, one-of-a-kind experience that not all haunted houses can match.
One issue preventing this maze from reaching the number one spot is its heavily hyped “wet path” feature. While it doesn’t actually make you wet, it’s more the excessive hype that’s a letdown. The ceiling leaks, and there are no captivating sights to speak of-even the supposed carnage you’re meant to be walking under fails to impress.
1.) Five Nights at Freddy’s
Universal Really Nailed the Animatronics and Environment Here
It’s fantastic that Five Nights at Freddy’s has finally become part of Halloween Horror Nights, making the haunted house experience perfect for fans. Frankly, it’s surprising that it took so long for this collaboration to occur. Fortunately, now that it’s here, it’s been a big success!
To begin with, it’s worth mentioning the remarkable lifelike technology (some enthusiasts spotted back at HHN in 2023), resembling the movies themselves, offering an authentic experience. In various parts of the labyrinth, these “lifelike figures” are often controlled by human performers. Yet, even those appear breathtakingly realistic, with the actors skillfully concealed to such an extent that most spectators may remain unaware of the humans behind their actions.
The level of detail given to the animatronics is impressive, but the setting itself is equally immersive. It seems as if you’ve truly stepped inside Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, experiencing its decline in real-time and as if it were really happening.
