Gwyneth Paltrow’s Least Favorite Part About Making Marvel, Avengers Movies: ‘I’m Going to Die’

Gwyneth Paltrow has a lot of experience with filmmaking and understands the work it takes to create a successful movie that both critics and audiences will enjoy. But she’s discovered that working with Disney is a whole different experience – a lesson she learned while playing Pepper Potts in the Iron Man films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Gwyneth Paltrow, who has starred in films ranging from comedies like Shallow Hal to massive hits like Avengers: Endgame, has voiced her frustrations with the way Marvel movies are made. Speaking on the Good Hand with Amy Poehler podcast, she explained that Marvel productions often involve a lot of waiting around, which differs significantly from her experiences on other films, even those with smaller budgets like Glee: The 3D Concert Movie.

I’m realizing I need to work more efficiently. Seeing how quickly things move on the show Glee really highlighted that for me – they accomplish so much in a single day and you’re constantly busy. I’m used to working all day, but on a Marvel movie, it’s a completely different pace. You can spend 14 hours on set in your trailer, feeling like no one’s going to come get you and you’re just waiting around.

Amy Poehler completely agreed with the comparison, explaining that working on Saturday Night Live felt like being in an emergency room. Actors often had to create an entire sketch in just 24 hours, leaving no time to spare. Gwyneth Paltrow, however, found this very different from making Marvel movies. While she enjoys the films, she admitted the slower pace isn’t her favorite – she doesn’t love the downtime, even if it’s ‘3000’ times better.

The MCU Is a Waiting Game For Actors, Too

Pepper Potts, played by Paltrow, faces an even greater challenge: she must now mourn not only Tony Stark, who died in Avengers: Endgame – a film where she famously fought alongside the heroes in an Iron Man suit – but a version of him from another universe who has become the supervillain Doctor Doom.

Sources say Gwyneth Paltrow will return as her Marvel character in both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. This means she’s committed to several more years of filming as the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues into Phase 6. While she clearly loves being part of Marvel, it’s safe to say she values that time immensely.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters on Dec. 18, 2026.
