Director Guy Ritchie’s new film, starring Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal, is generating a lot of buzz and could be his biggest success yet, potentially reversing the fortunes of some of his earlier movies that didn’t perform as well.
Guy Ritchie is one of Hollywood’s most in-demand directors, with a packed schedule of TV and film projects. His work, like the recent Young Sherlock series on Prime Video, has been very successful, leading to even more opportunities. But the most anticipated project on his plate is a new film starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Henry Cavill.
Ritchie is famous for assembling great casts, and this new film boasts one that’s shaping up to be even stronger. It also appears to be an ideal project for him to revitalize his career after a few previous movies didn’t perform as well.
In The Grey Can Make Up For Guy Ritchie’s Previous Collaborations With Henry Cavill & Jake Gyllenhaal
Though Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Guy Ritchie are collaborating for the first time on the film In The Grey, Ritchie has worked with each actor separately before. Cavill previously led Ritchie’s 2015 action comedy The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and appeared in his more recent war film, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.
I really enjoyed Guy Ritchie’s recent films! In 2023, he put out The Covenant with Jake Gyllenhaal taking the lead. And honestly, all three – The Man From U.N.C.L.E., The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, and The Covenant – were pretty well-received by critics. Looking at Rotten Tomatoes, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. scored a solid 68%, while The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and The Covenant got 68% and 82% respectively – not bad at all!
Although critics and audiences generally liked all three films, they didn’t perform well in theaters. Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant earned just over $21 million, despite costing $55 million to make. Similarly, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare brought in a little over $29 million, while its budget was $60 million.
Despite earning $110 million, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. wasn’t profitable, as its budget was estimated between $75 and $84 million. Like other films directed by Guy Ritchie, it was full of exciting elements and featured strong performances from Jake Gyllenhaal and Henry Cavill, but it didn’t perform well financially worldwide.
However, The Grey has the potential to be a real turning point, potentially making up for the shortcomings of the previous three films. It appears to be a more broadly appealing action-adventure story, and director Ritchie seems to be developing a strong working relationship with Cavill and Gyllenhaal, truly understanding their talents and how to best showcase them on screen.

As a big fan of Guy Ritchie, Henry Cavill, and Jake Gyllenhaal, I was really enjoying In The Grey, but it got me thinking about some of their other work. The Covenant, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. are all genuinely fun movies, too. And honestly, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. feels like it could easily fit right in with the best spy thrillers out there, like a James Bond film.
As a fan, I really hoped this movie would do well because it felt like it could have launched a whole series starring Henry Cavill! It would have been amazing to see him lead a franchise.
Both The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant are thoroughly entertaining. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is packed with action, boasts a great cast, and is just plain fun. Meanwhile, The Covenant offers a touching story of friendship during wartime, showcasing Jake Gyllenhaal’s impressive acting skills.
With the release of In The Grey not until May 15, 2026, fans have plenty of time to enjoy earlier films by director Guy Ritchie featuring Jake Gyllenhaal and Henry Cavill. Watching those movies will be a great way to get familiar with Ritchie’s filmmaking style and how he’s worked with these two actors over time.
