Guillermo del Toro has announced that a longer cut of his popular movie adaptation of Frankenstein will be released soon.
At the Sundance Film Festival, while presenting a restored version of his first film, Cronos, the director announced that a longer version of Frankenstein is finished. He didn’t say exactly when it will come out, but indicated it will be available soon, according to people who were there.
Viewers have said that del Toro referred to an alternate cut of his Frankenstein adaptation as the “all the stitches” version. Based on what he’s shared, the new project will likely include everything that was cut from the theatrical and Netflix releases of the film.
Del Toro has announced a longer version of the film is coming, but hasn’t said where we’ll be able to watch it. While Netflix seems like the most likely streaming home for this expanded cut of Frankenstein, that’s not guaranteed. It could appear on multiple streaming services, or even in theaters. Del Toro also suggests a DVD or Blu-ray release is possible.
Netflix and Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein is a fresh take on Mary Shelley’s classic 1818 novel. The series centers on Victor Frankenstein, a self-centered scientist who creates a monstrous being through questionable methods. Soon, both creator and creation face the fallout from Victor’s choices, leading to widespread turmoil.
This movie version of the classic Gothic story portrays Frankenstein’s monster as a more sympathetic character than the original book. Instead of being driven by revenge and committing outright murder, the monster primarily acts to protect himself. The film also changes the ending significantly: the creature chooses to live and even forgives his creator, Victor, who calls him “son” before passing away.
The book concludes with a bleak and disheartening ending. The scientist dies attempting to destroy the creature he made. Although Frankenstein’s monster feels sorry for what he’s done, he chooses to end his own life rather than try to rebuild it. The book doesn’t explicitly state how or if he dies, but strongly suggests he follows through with his intention to kill himself.
Del Toro’s Frankenstein is available to stream on Netflix.
