James Cameron’s next Avatar film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, is scheduled to come out on December 19, 2025. The story follows the Na’vi as they confront a new enemy called the Ash People, who are allied with their old foe, Quaritch. Early looks at the movie suggest another visually stunning experience from the director of the first two Avatar films. The third Avatar movie has only been seen by a select few, including the celebrated director Guillermo del Toro, who calls every Avatar film a “masterpiece,” and believes the upcoming third installment will be no exception.
Guillermo del Toro, the director of Pan’s Labyrinth, recently discussed his favorite films on the Konbini series, Video Club. The show features filmmakers recommending movies like they’re customers in a video store. While ‘browsing,’ del Toro chose Avatar (2009) as one of his picks, praising director James Cameron and calling the Avatar films sci-fi masterpieces built on a complete and well-developed mythology.
He’s been fascinated with Avatar for as long as I’ve known him – he was even discussing it back in the ’90s! We’ve had many conversations about it, and it’s clearly been a long-held passion of his.
I’ve watched all three Avatar films, and they’re truly incredible. I have a good idea of where the story is headed, and I think audiences will be really surprised. I can’t reveal anything specific about the third film, but it’s rare for an American filmmaker to build such a complete and detailed world. George Lucas and Frank Baum, who created Star Wars and the Wizard of Oz respectively, are examples of this, and James Cameron is now doing the same with Avatar. He’s going to take viewers on an amazing journey.
Del Toro Has Always Shown His Support for James Cameron’s Work
In 2022, Guillermo del Toro shared his admiration for the film Avatar: The Way of Water. On social media, the Oscar-winning director called it a “staggering achievement,” praising its grand scale, beautiful scenery, and emotional depth, and noting that the director was “at the peak of his powers.”
Their friendship actually began in the early 1990s, when James Cameron was working on Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and Guillermo del Toro was trying to find someone to distribute his first feature film, Cronos. Del Toro recalls, while holding an original copy of Avatar:
Jim is my brother, and we’ve known each other for about 30 years. We first met around 1991 or 1992 and hit it off immediately. I always admired him because he’s incredibly intelligent, though I’m not sure why he liked me! I lived with him for a long time, and we bonded over anime. He got me into Patlabor, and I introduced him to Battle Angel.
Del Toro also shared how Cameron helped during the time his father was kidnapped in Mexico back in 1997.
He actually helped when my father was kidnapped. People often mention the million-dollar loan, but that’s not the full story. He paid a quarter of a million dollars to hire a negotiator – he didn’t just lend money. We eventually repaid him. When my dad was taken, I called him, and he immediately arranged for a negotiator to come from the UK, telling me to follow their lead. He was crucial in getting things moving. He even wanted to deliver the ransom money with the US Marines! Jim loves excitement – that’s why he’s always exploring the ocean depths, while I prefer something simple like grabbing a burger.
